Chapter 97
My face flushed. Sherry’s teasing, the ambiguous things he said last night, echoed in my mind.
Evan waited.“Still thinking?”
“Thank you for the offer, but I’ll handle this myself! Thank you! Goodbye!” I quickly hung up.
Evan:… He put down his phone, thoughtful. He seemed to understand something; a shadow fell over his usually bright
eyes.
I held my phone for five minutes, my heart gradually calming. Thinking back, he’d been kind….but did he really show any romantic interest? I’d over–analyzed. Impossible! He didn’t even like women!
“Bang!” The door slammed. Sherry was home. She’d had a court hearing that morning. The case hadn’t gone well; the other side presented new evidence, forcing a recess. She’d had lunch with her client and met at a nearby cafe. By the time she saw Jiang Wenhui’s statement, it was nearly one o’clock. She’d planned to go back to the office but went straight home.
“Did Jiang Wenhui get hit by a car?” she asked, throwing her briefcase down.
I composed myself.“It is strange.”
Sherry paced the room.“She can release a statement, so can we. What we have is even more explosive. But if we do that, you and Julian won’t even have the decency left.”
My eyes turned icy.“The Shaw family hasn’t given me any decency.”
Sherry sat down.“I mean, Julian might not know about today’s events. And you guys had eight good years…” Me:“Even if he didn’t plan this, isn’t he still responsible? I wouldn’t have tried to maintain any decency. If he’d just divorced me properly, there wouldn’t be so much drama. What I did, what Rita did, what Jiang Wenhui did…it was all forced by him. Shouldn’t he bear the consequences?”
Sherry was silent. Then she nodded.“Okay, let’s fight back. Let’s tear them apart. I’m your divorce lawyer and your best friend. I’ll speak for you.”
We sprang into action, outlining our counterarguments, our attacks, and our evidence. As we prepared to record a video on my phone, the doorbell rang.
Sherry:“I’ll get it.” She looked through the peephole. It was Julian. He had the nerve to show up! Just as she was about to lash out, she calmed herself, activated her phone’s recording feature, and hid it behind a cushion, giving me a signal before opening the door.
