Chloe’s grades were average; she got into a community college. Usually, she stayed in the dorm, but lately she’d been running home at night to cook for Ethan.
Ethan appreciated it, but her enthusiasm made him suspicious. At dinner, he eyed Chloe suspiciously.“Riley’s gone, and you seem pretty happy?”
His gaze was intense. Chloe’s heart skipped a beat, but she had a prepared answer. “Of course I’m happy! She hated me and bullied me all the time…”
Chloe looked at Ethan pitifully, subtly observing him.
Ethan frowned, taking a sip of juice Chloe had made.
Chloe continued, “You know what she had done to me…”
“Okay,” Ethan interrupted, patting her head, resuming his usual gentle demeanor.
In the spring of Riley sophomore year, she decided to switch majors from physics to psychology. Her advisor and the department were confused. Riley excelled in physics and showed exceptional talent. Why would she do that?
During a meeting with a professor, Riley explained, “I was once saved by a ‘person‘ and I know how much courage it takes to overcome hardship. Some courage needs external motivation. I want to be someone who gives others that motivation.”
Months earlier, Riley found a girl collapsed on the street. The girl had been severely bullied at school and attempted suicide multiple times. Riley helped her, and she eventually improved after therapy. The doctor said Riley’s words gave the girl courage. Riley realized professional knowledge would have been more helpful.
“That’s why I want to switch majors,” Riley said confidently.
After work, Riley returned home. It was her 20th birthday, her second year at Harvard. The system wasn’t there to wish her a happy birthday. She lit a single candle on a small cupcake. She watched the flame, smiling. Life was long; hardship and luck were both important. It was the attitude that mattered.
The system was like a dream, pulling her out of the mud. It gave her courage to fight back. But then it vanished without explanation.
Host, you are excellent. The only thing you needed was courage.
Now you have the courage to fight back, right?
Her phone rang; it was her advisor.
“Riley
I’m sorry to call you so late, but congratulations, your major change is approved.”
Riley was happy.“Thank you.”
“Have a wonderful evening.”
“You too.”
The candle was almost out. Riley closed her eyes, clasped her hands.
“I hope I can live well…”
“Whoosh!”

Riley blew out the candle. A shooting star streaked across the sky, quickly disappearing.
