chapter8.
After a while, Stella woke up.
When she came to, she was blinded by bright hospital lights.
Once her eyes adjusted, she noticed Nathaniel nearby, preoccupied with his phone.
“Are you awake?” he asked, not looking up.
“What happened?” she inquired.
“Hypoglycemia,” Nathaniel replied, frowning at his phone.
Stella glimpsed Nathaniel’s incomprehensible work on his phone, realizing he was swamped yet puzzled as to why he lingered.
She wanted Nathaniel to pour her a glass of water at first. But seeing him busy, she tried to manage herself.
Still weakened, she fell, saved by Nathaniel’s swift catch.
Stella smelt his tobacco scent and quickly moved away.
Noticing it, Nathaniel frowned, thinking, “Why is she avoiding me? Am I a virus?”
“What do you want?” He asked coldly.

“Water,” Stella bit her lip and said, softening her voice.
Nathaniel was startled and got goosebumps all over.
Stella initially possessed a voice as sweet as honey. Now, she sounded softer when she was sick, more enchanting allure.
Nathaniel set his phone down and fetched her water.
Stella took the glass and sipped the water. Her long eyelashes cast a shadow, making her pale face even more pitiful.
After finishing, her stomach growled, and they both froze.
Stella lowered her head, wishing she could disappear.
“Oh no! Always embarrassing myself in front of Nathaniel,” she thought.
She was usually composed in the eyes of her colleagues.
“I’ll be back,” he said, leaving the room.
Stella was left puzzled.
Stella glanced at her half–full IV bag, propped helplessly against her bed.
A young boy next to her, hooked up to an IV, looked up from his book and said, “My mom thinks your boyfriend’s handsome.”

Taken aback, Stella offered an awkward smile.
Then, his mother quickly hushed him, apologizing to Stella, “Sorry, kids say the darndest things. I hope it doesn’t bother
you.”
“It’s okay,” Stella smiled.

“Alas! I’m really jealous! Your boyfriend took off work to be here and even talked to the doctor for you many times. It’s hard to find such a good–looking, caring guy. Ever since I got married, I’ve been managing work, kids, and everything, with little help from my husband…”
The woman rambled on, but Stella was lost in her thoughts after she mentioned the boyfriend.
“Is she referring to Nathaniel?” she wondered.

Nathaniel looked distant and aloof.
Stella was surprised that he was considerate and at least didn’t leave her alone in the hospital.
It reminded Stella of the past. Once, she stayed up late making plans and had a stomachache. To spare her parents the worry, she had to ring Jack for a hospital run.
But he left before she finished the examination, saying that he was going to meet a client.

Later, Stella found out that the client was Jack’s friend. They played games all afternoon. However, he explained to her that his friend could help him introduce clients.
So, she let it go, thinking guys should be ambitious.
But now, she realized he just didn’t care about her.
Good thing she saw his true colors.
With a ding, the bell rang, calling Stella’s mind back.
The nurse pulled out the needle for the primary school student. Then, he and his mom waved goodbye to Stella and left.
Stella waved back and looked outside the door, wondering where Nathaniel had gone.
While she was thinking, the cell phone on the edge of the bed
rang.
Stella saw that it was an unfamiliar number and was worried it was a new client, so she immediately picked it up.
“Hello, who is it?”
“Who… Who are you?” A woman’s hesitant voice sounded.
