Chapter 10
“Well, well, feeling sorry for ourselves, are we? Looks like I’ve come at a bad time-”
Somehow, Emily had entered my hospital room without me noticing.
She was holding a fruit basket in one hand, the other resting smugly on her belly as she looked at me.
lignored her. She put down the fruit basket and sat on the nearby stool, talking to herself. “I heard someone forcibly
aborted your baby yesterday, and you nearly died from excessive bleeding?”
She burst out laughing. “Who knew you were so tough? Even that couldn’t finish you off.”
“So? What do you want? Or did you just come to gloat?”
“Oh, I’m here to gloat, sure. And to show off a little. Is that not allowed?” She looked down at me condescendingly, placing
her hand on my stomach.
“Look, now that you’ve lost the baby, why don’t you give up your position as Mrs. Brooks? Hand it over to me. After all, I
used to be your very best friend, and now I’m carrying Dave’s child.”
“You wouldn’t want the child to be born out of wedlock, would you? For the baby’s sake?”
I laughed coldly. “Why are you telling me this? What does your child have to do with me?”
“Even if I divorce David Brooks.py

demands? What, you think just because you’re pregnant you can stage
a coup? Don’t make me laugh. There are plenty of younger, prettier women who want to bear Dave’s children. You don’t even
rank among them.”
Enraged, she stood up and threw the water from the table at me. “You! You think you’re still the same old Nora Brooks?”
“Look in the mirror before you talk about me. Your face is sallow, and you’ve gotten fat. No wonder Dave’s lovers all call
you a washed–up old hag-”
lignored her provocation and calmly said, “I’ve never understood. You and him have been together for a long time. Why
I didn’t you try to compete with me? Why did you keep pretending to be my
friend?”
“Did you enjoy the thrill? Or did you just find it amusing to play me for a fool? I remember you’ve had boyfriends these
past few years.”

Emily burst out laughing. “You’re right. I never intended to compete with you. I just found it entertaining. Think about it – on the surface, I was your best friend, fighting with your husband for your sake. But behind closed doors, we’d meet in
secret for our affair. Don’t you find that interesting? You have no idea how hilarious it was to watch you try to mediate our
‘fights.”
“Why would you do this? I never did anything to wrong you…”
Her face twisted. “Why? Probably jealousy.”
“I could never understand. You’re just an orphan, no mother, a father who doesn’t care about you. So why were you always the center of attention wherever you went? Friends I wanted but couldn’t make would seek you out. Boys I liked would fall for you. Even the job offer I wanted most, you could easily get. I don’t get it. What makes you so special?”
“I have both parents. Why is my life even worse than yours, an orphan?”
“You probably don’t realize, but I’ve been jealous of you for as long as we’ve known each other.”
She smiled at this point. “But it doesn’t matter now. I’m not jealous anymore. Because now, you have nothing.”
“Your husband betrayed you, your career is gone, you couldn’t even keep your baby, and you’ve turned into a haggard old woman. There’s nothing about you that can compare to me now.”
“I didn’t want to compete before, which is why I let you be Mrs. Brooks for five peaceful years. But now that I have a child, I
naturally have to think of its future. You’d better step aside willingly. Don’t force me to… hurt you.”
With those words and a victorious smile on her lips, she left, cradling her belly.
