Chapter 4
My heart felt like it was being stabbed. The pain made me double over, gasping for air.
Sweat trickled from my forehead into my eyes, stinging them. Tears burst forth in an instant.
The affair with David’s secretary had already nearly killed me.
But I never imagined that my best friend would also…
And from the sound of it, they’d been carrying on behind my back for who knows how many years.
I suddenly felt like such a failure at life.
Everyone around me seemed to be wearing masks of deceit, wrapped in human skin.
I couldn’t tell what was real anymore.
Perhaps I’d been in the bathroom too long, and David worried something had happened to me.
So he stopped flirting and came with Emily to find me.
Seeing me bent over clutching my chest, David and Emily rushed forward to help me.
I shoved them away. “Get lost! You disgust me!”
Emily fell to the ground, clutching her leg and screaming, “My leg hurts so much! Dave, is my leg broken?”
David immediately crouched down to check.
She cried, her face a mess of tears, one hand on her leg and the other clutching David’s arm, shaking it slightly. “Never mind, don’t worry about me. Check on Nora first, okay?”
“I’ll be fine on my own. It’s just my leg, it can wait.”
Her words said one thing, but her hand gripped David’s arm tightly.
“But… I’m carrying your child, Dave. I’m so scared something might happen to our baby…”
Her pale face, frail body, and trembling voice…
If I were a man, I’d probably choose to save her first too.
“Nora, what the hell are you doing?” David shouted at me.
He scooped Emily up and carried her away without so much as a glance back at me.
Emily’s eyes met mine with a hint of challenge. She mouthed silently, “Clown!”
