I try to focus on her words, but the pain and confusion are overwhelming. Rhett stands over me, his hand still raised as if he’s ready to strike again.
“Why?” I manage to choke out, tears streaming down my face. “Why are you doing this?”

encroaching darkness, but I force myself to my feet when I feel something wet run down the side of my face, my fingers gently prod the slick area and I feel something warm and wet drip off my chin.
Looking at my fingertips they are slick with blood, yet my ear burns the most. My mother shrieks when I realize he has sliced my face and ear open.
Rhett leans down and grabs me by the hair, yanking my head back so that I am forced to look up at him. His eyes bore into mine with such intensity that it takes all of my willpower not to cower away from him.
“You have Soren’s love, but he still answers to someone; you can love him all you want; think you can claim him?” he hisses in my ear. “I’ll kill you before I let another man have you.”
I feel sickened by his words and try to pull away from him, but his grip only tightens, my hair pulling from my scalp painfully. My mother whimpers and moves, but Bianca makes her freeze quickly. “Ah ah, I wouldn’t,” Bianca taunts. My mother looks at me but I shake my head the best I can, warning her
not to.
“You idiot, did you really think I would let you run off with a king and be his whore?”
“You seemed hellbent on selling me to him before!”
Rhett laughs. “He didn’t want you! He told me to find the money and that he wouldn’t take a woman as payment. I had other plans, and now the only way I can go through with it is by fucking claiming you!”
