Chapter 9
No matter whatever reason or attempts
that my senior gave James, he still refused to leave me alone.
So, he sat by my bedside silently all day long and took good care of me.
However, due to the lack of medical
resources, my burn wounds began showing signs of infection and as a result, I had a high fever.
My failing health made James bring me back to our country.
This decision caused another huge uproar from everyone. It was because no one expected James to cancel his engagement party with Jane and then go to Africa to bring me back home. On top of that, he even announced that he wanted to take me
as his wife.
The people who once mocked me for falling out of favor all fell silent.

However, all of these did not bring

James even neglected his big company so he could personally tend to my everyday needs. He even cooked and washed my clothes.
It was as if things had gone back to how they used to be.
However, I knew that we could never go back to the way we used to be.
Nowadays, I was more like a bird that he kept in a golden cage.
He showed me his affection without making any fuss and sent me flowers and gifts every day, each one different from the
last.
He even handled all the wedding planning personally. For him, marrying me had become an obsession.
His kindness left me confused. I could not tell if he was trying to make up for past

mistakes or if he truly loved me.
Yet, if he truly loved me, should not he respect my choices?
He spent a fortune to treat my scars and was able to make them almost invisible.
However, you could never revive a dead heart.
When James proposed to me with a diamond ring, I refused him coldly, “Don’t waste your time. I won‘ t marry you.”
He was confused. “Haven‘ t I been good enough to you? Why can’t you see my sincerity?”
“If I didn’t love you, why would I face all this criticism just to marry you?” he asked.
His sudden declaration of love couldn’t stir even the slightest ripple in my heart.
“James, I told you before that we’re even now. Our night together was just a fling. Why are you taking it so seriously?” I

asked.
“Sandra, do you really feel nothing for me?”
He stared into my eyes, afraid to miss even the smallest flicker of emotion.
However, my face remained unchanged as I told him, “No, nothing.”
His hand which was holding the ring, fell weakly to his side.
“Is it because of the child? If the child were still here, would you still love me?”
“If that reason will help you let go, then
let’s say it was because of the child,” I said calmly.
yes,
Then he left and took the ring with him and for several days, he didn’t show up in front of me.
When his bodyguard called me for help, I was in the middle of packing to leave again.
“Madam, Mr. Stork is drunk and causing a

scene at the bar. We can’t stop him. Can you come and talk to him?”
“Don’t call me that. If you all can’t
handle him, what makes you think I can? If it’s really that bad, call the police,” I told
them.
The bodyguard pleaded with me and the sound of smashing objects was loud on the
other end.
I checked the time and eventually decided to go to the bar.
James and another drunk man were fighting, both of them covered in bruises.
When I arrived, everyone in the bar turned to look at me. Ignoring their amused. glances, I grabbed James‘ s arm as he threw a punch.
“Have you had enough?” I asked.
With his eyes red, James complained,
“Sandra, he insulted you! So, I have to tear his mouth apart!”

It turned out James had gotten angry because someone accused me of using underhanded means to climb the social.
ladder.
Yet, what they said was not entirely wrong. If it hadn’t been for that reckless night and the child, he would probably be happily engaged to Jane right now.
Under my gaze, James eventually stopped.
I took him to the hospital, where he exaggerated every little pain, trying to gain my sympathy.
In the past, just seeing him frown would make my heart ache. Now, even though he was really injured and needed stitches, my heart only tightened for a moment before returning to normal.
“James, let go of yourself and let go of me too.”
As he got his stitches, he stopped shouting, even letting the blood flow without a word.

Our eyes met for a long time before he finally gave in.
“Fine. However, can you not leave?”
So, he knew all along.
“I can’t stay,” I told him.
“Then let me take you.” He gave in.
After getting his stitches, he took me to the airport and accompanied me back to Africa.
