Cara’s POV
The medical team takes Mia for full body scans and more extensive tests. The doctor explains that he has some ideas for treatment options, but they need more data before they
can start.
“We gave her medicine to make her comfortable, but there’s still so much we don’t know yet. This will take time, but I assure you, we’re working as fast as we can,” the doctor says.
I nod, and my eyes are drawn to all the medical school certificate hanging on the wall, showing the doctor’s name. He is clearly highly educated. He’s the best person to be trusted with caring for my sweet little Mia.
Before the medical team leaves the room with Mia in tow, one of the nurses turns to me
kindly.
“You should go get some rest and eat something. Don’t forget to take care of yourself, too,” she says to me with a gentle and caring smile.
I take another look at my sleeping daughter, the little red wolf looking so peaceful, as if she doesn’t have a care in the world. As if she has no idea what danger her little body is truly in.
At least she doesn’t seem to be in any pain.
That one thought gives me hope.
I make my way to the hospital waiting room, following the aromatic smell of the coffee brewing. I feel exhausted, it’s been such a long night. My mouth waters at the scent of the
hot coffee.
“Got a cup for you,” Alaric says as I enter the room, shocking me.
I figured he would be off somewhere else, probably back to work. But he’s here. And he brought me coffee.
He extends his arm, handing me a freshly poured coffee. “I thought you would probably want this.”
It’s a kind gesture, and I’m pleasantly surprised by his thoughtfulness.
“Thank you,” I say to him with a sincere look. The corners of my mouth turn up in a small, involuntary smile.
……“Alaric seems stunned by my gratefulness and warm expression. He coughs suddenly, looking away from me awkwardly. His features go back the usual cold and detached form that I’m used to.

to the same old Alaric I’ve always known. Cold as ever.
“So…” he says gruffly after a long pause, “How is the little one?”
We sit at a small wooden table in the corner of the waiting room. It’s such an early hour in the morning that we’re alone in this room.
I’m happy for the privacy. After all the stares I got on our way to the allergy department, it’s only a matter of time until I run into more familiar faces.
“It’s worse than I thought,” I say, my mind racing with all the information the doctors had given me about Mia’s condition.
“Worse?” Alaric asks, his dark eyebrows raised
Inod, “Yes, she has fully shifted into wolf form”
“Shifted?! But she’s so young!” Alaric is shocked, just like I was.
“That’s impossible!” he says.
“It happened right in front of my eyes. The doctors think…” I pause, trying to consider how much information to tell him,
I can’t let Alaric know the truth.
I’ve got to be careful now. I’ve got to watch my words.
“The doctors think there is a problem with her hormones. They are afraid she may not be able to shift back on her own…” I say.
“She might turn feral?” Alaric asks. His bright blue eyes are full of worries.
Those eyes remind me of Mia’s. Or maybe Mia’s eyes remind me of his.
“Yes,” I whisper.
I steal a glance and see terror cross his face for only a second. Then his cool mask is back firmly in place.
“These doctors are the best in the world. They will cure her, I’m sure of it.” He says confidently, looking into my eyes.
I nod, hoping he’s right.
Alaric’s POV
Frustration is coursing through me, though I’m trying to keep it in check.
I just can’t believe that such a sweet, adorable little girl could be so sick with such a serious condition.

What right does he have to leave these two alone at a time like this?
“Where is her father?” I ask Cara directly. I can tell immediately from the look on her face. that I’m not hiding my disgust for this man very well.
Cara looks at me with those wide, green eyes for a moment before responding.
“He’s…. unavailable… right now.”
“Unavailable?! What could possibly be more important than his own daughter?! His own wife?!” The thought makes me angry.
Too many males busy themselves with things that are unimportant. Too many males don’t spend enough time protecting their own.
Cara’s husband should be ashamed of himself, whoever he is.
When Cara says nothing in response, I keep going, unable to stop myself. “How can your husband let her suffer like this without being here?!”
If I was her husband, I’d never let that happen…
Wait.
I can’t think like that.
…I am not Cara’s husband, and I never will be.
I just can’t stand to see these two she–wolves being left alone at a time like this. My frustration has nothing to do with Cara and me’s past relationship. It has nothing to do with the feelings I used to think I had for her.
Feelings that I now understand I was wrong about.
It’s just my natural Alpha side. It’s my drive to lead. My drive and instinct to care for those who need help.
It’s nothing more than that. It’s just natural. It’s just instinct.
And apparently Cara’s husband doesn’t possess that same instinct. He seems worthless to me. Absolutely worthless.
How could she have ended up with a male like that?! As strong and beautiful and capable as Cara is?! She deserves so much more than what this poor excuse for a male is giving her.
Cara still says nothing. She’s looking away, not looking at me, not looking at anything at all. It’s like she’s gone blank.
