Alaric’s POV
“Breaking news tonight, the new Beta for Pack BloodyMoon has just been announced,” I hear the TV new announcer say clearly.
I turn
up
the volume of the TV in my office and lean back in my chair. My butler John brings me a cup of coffee.
He looks at the TV and smiles at me. “This must be Miss Cara. There’s no better Beta than
her.”
I don’t answer him, just nodding simply. I agree with that more than anyone.
As long as Eamon isn’t a fool, everyone knows who is the most suited for the position and who can contribute the most to the pack….
I pick up my coffee cup, waiting for the inevitable answer to be revealed.
“The new Beta will be… Aylon Auburn!”
“Ahem!” I almost choke on my coffee.
Aylon?
Who’s that?
“Are you okay, sir?” My butler asks nervously, handing me his handkerchief. “Aylon Arbun… who is that?”
That’s also my question.
“I’ve never heard that name before“. I compose myself, cousin or uncle.”
Maybe it’s another Arbun
But now I’m more confused than ever as to why Eamon was keeping it such a secret. I don’t have the faintest idea who this Aylon even is.
No achievements, no reputation, just another Arbun from who knows where.
They didn’t make Cara the Beta. Maybe because she’s female, or maybe because they think she’s a princess now and doesn’t need to work anymore.
Whatever, Eamon should be ashamed of himself, though. I know that much.
“Turns out it’s not Miss Cara.” John sighs. “I wonder how she’s doing now.”
It should be pretty good. I think back to how Cara looked the last time I saw her.
She now has six brothers, she’s a princess, she has a cute daughter, and a husband…

#25 BONUS
A husband who, when his daughter is sick, isn’t by her side–completely worthless.
Cara Wilson… Cara Auburn… or whatever her last name is now… I still don’t know her husband’s name…I don’t know anything about him…
..A husband.
I repeat that word in my mind.
“Are you starting to regret it now?” Grey mocks me in my mind. “We could have been with our mate! Mated with her! Married her!”
“I know all of that. So please, shut up now.” I say rudely.
I put down my coffee cup and get back to work.
I will keep my promise. I won’t get any closer to her, I won’t fall in love with her, I won’t be with her by the name of the Alpha King, this is my vow.
John helps me with my work. He’s my butler, and also my Beta. Because there’s no in my pack as capable as Cara anymore. Instead of promoting fools, it’s better to choose someone more obedient.
“Is Cara Wilson still keeping her weekly visits to our hospital?” I ask John.
“Yes, sir. Sometimes she sends her friend, Ruby I think her name is, instead. But usually it’s Cara who accompanies the little girl…” John trails off.
I look up at his face and see a hint of hesitation. Like there’s more he has to say, but he’s unsure if he should.
I’ve been practicing reading people’s faces since I was a child. As a, Alpha King, it’s a skill that has served me very well. But sometimes, such as moments like this with John, it’s terribly annoying.
“Whatever it is you’re thinking, just say it.” I tell him sternly. No point in wasting time.
“Yes, sir,” he blushes. “It’s just… well, there are rumors amongst the pack…”
“Rumors?”
“Yes. Some of our pack members have interacted with Cara at the hospital, and unfortunately the interactions have not been positive.” John looks nervous to say that much.
“What do you
mean?” I ask. “Don’t be shy, just give it to me plainly.”
“Well, they say that she’s changed. She’s been described as aloof and unkind. From what I’ve heard about her before, it sounds like she has changed dramatically since leaving our pack,” John’s discomfort is telegraphed all over his face.

“I suppose becoming a princess will do that to a person…” I say, mostly to myself.
So, my suspicions were correct. Cara has taken to the fanciful and carefree lifestyle of a princess.
That’s why Eamon didn’t promote her to Beta.
Well, in my opinion, she deserves the rest and relaxation that she now has. She was an incredible Beta and she’s been through so much since then…..
It’s not like her good–for–nothing husband was there to protect her.
I suddenly realize that I’ve never actually apologized to her for my part in her misery.
Just an apology… It’s something I should do. It doesn’t break my promise.
“That will be all, John. Please leave me now.” I order my Beta to leave the office. I need to
be alone.
I need to think.
I need to tell her that I’m sorry.
That I didn’t know any of this would happen.
Those things would turn out this way.
I grab my phone and start a text message.
“Cara.” It’s all I can type.
I rarely text on my phone. I have so much I want to say to her. But through a conversation, I’m not sure if I can fully convey everything
This might be the most efficient way to do it. If she replies, it means we can continue the conversation. Maybe we can even start talking on the phone. I take another sip of my
coffee.
I stare at the blinking cursor, waiting for the words to come to me. I wish I could say so many things, but it’s too late…
“Just tell her how you feel,” my wolf, Grey, tells me inside my head.
“Easier said than done,” I reply with a humorless laugh.
“Cara. I’m sorry. For Lilia, for everything. I hope you can forgive me. Sincerely yours, Alaric.”
..It seems a bit foolish.
After 15 minutes of staring at my phone, plus the last six years I’ve spent ruminating on all that’s happened, this text is the best I can do.

1 hit send before I lose my nerve. I set the phone down on my desk, but my eyes glance to it
just waiting for her reply.

I hope she’ll at least reply with a letter, or, I hope I can call her and tell her more of my
apologies.
I don’t have to wait too long.
After a few moments, my phone buzzes.
“Leave her alone Alaric. She will never forgive you. You are blocked.”
My heart sank. I stare at the message, re–reading it several times to make sure I’m understanding it correctly.
That doesn’t sound like Cara at all. That must not be Cara.
It must be someone else, like…
Her husband?!
