I don’t know how my words touched a nerve with Ruben.
He suddenly exploded in anger, “Slap-” and struck me hard across the face.
“Joanna, are you trying to test my patience?”
“Show some respect! Why are you fighting over a dead person?”
“Have I not given you enough?”
Before I could react to the slap, my right cheek was struck again:
“How dare you curse my son to death? I should have taught you some manners!”
This time, it was Molly who hit me.
Though I hadn’t come from wealth, I had always been my mother’s “little princess.”
Who gave them the right to hit me?
A wave of frustration hit me all at once, and tears flooded my eyes.
As I cried, I started laughing bitterly:
“Fine, okay, you really have no shame!”
“Ruben, don’t say anything more. Let’s break up. Go spend your time with your dead first love. Are you happy now?”
I went back to my room, threw on my coat, grabbed a few things, and rushed out the door.
“Joanna, every time we fight, you do this. If you leave this time, don’t ever come back!”
“You’ll regret this. Don’t come crawling back to beg me!”

Then, I heard the sound of a cup shattering behind me,
The streets were almost empty in the early morning, with only a few convenience stores still open

“Hector Morgan?” I called out to him first,

Two years ago, we graduated from college,
He signed with a company in Los Angeles, while I returned to New York,
We’didn’t want a long distance relationship, so we broke up peacefully,
thought, if I hadn’t met Ruben a year ago,
I would have waited for him, hoping to reconcile,
The man I almost walked past suddenly stopped.
When he saw me, his eyes lit up:
“Joanna? What a coincidence!”
“I just came back to New York two days ago, and here we are meeting!”
