Chapter 2
“Alright, stop crying now. Let me get some first aid cream on those burns,”
He patted my head like i was a child as he went to grab the first aid kit, muttering, “Look at on sull so sensitive to pain after all this time. Always crying over everything. What would you do without me?”
I watched the red marks blooming on my wrist, silent.
“Yes, I’d been spoiled for seven whole years. What would I do without him?”
“But Nathan, I don’t want you anymore. I don’t want this fake love anymore,” I whispered to myself.
That night, I tossed and turned, finally falling into a restless sleep only to wake up drenched
in sweat.
The sun had barely risen when Nathan shook me awake.
“Get up, sleepyhead.”
I pushed at him with a groan, but he just grinned and kissed me quickly.
My drowsiness disappeared instantly. I wanted to slap him but held back.
Thankfully, it was just a quick peck.
“Wide awake now, sleeping beauty?”
I turned away, wiping my mouth in disgust.
“It’s Sunday. Let me sleep.”
Nathan’s expression turned concerned. “Did you know you had a fever last night? Come on, we need to get you to urgent care.”
Though I felt better, his tone left no room for argument. I got up reluctantly.
In the hospital corridor, we ran into Sophie.
She was hobbling along on what looked like a sprained ankle, struggling to walk on her own.
Nathan, who had been gentle and caring just moments before, instantly tensed up.
Completely forgetting my presence, he rushed over to support her, asking worriedly, “What
appened?”
Sophie smiled warmly, glancing past him to me.
“Just twisted my ankle. What brings you two here?”
Nathan hesitated, looking back at me uneasily.
“My friend’s sister had a fever, so I brought her in to get checked.
I was used to being called ‘his friend’s sister‘ by now.
Ever since Nathan decided to keep us secret, that’s all I was to the world his best friend’s sister he looked after.
Only his closest friends knew the truth.
Sophie nodded knowingly. “Since she’s staying at your place, of course you have to take good care of her. You two go ahead; I need to head over to orthopedics.”
She gestured toward the clinic on the opposite side of the hall.
Seeing her struggle to walk, Nathan lifted her up without hesitation.
“I’ll help you. Olivia, wait here.”
For some reason, just seeing Sophie made me feel weak and drained of all energy.
I leaned against the wall, saying nothing.
He didn’t even ask if I minded waiting. After those words, he was already carrying Sophie

toward the other clinic
In front of Sophie, his true feelings always showed through.
And he had no idea how obvious it was.
I forced a bitter smile, turned, and walked to the clinic on my own.
The thermometer confirmed what I suspected my temperature was 106°F. Not just in my
end after all.
The burn had gotten infected, and with all the stress lately, it triggered a viral infection. The doctor prescribed IV antibiotics.
Out of habit, my hand reached for my phone to call Nathan. I stopped myself mid–motion.
It’s funny how habits work.
With a bitter smile, I put my phone away and walked to the IV room alone.
