Chapter 4
Seeing my silence, Sophie tilted her head, studying my face carefully.
“I’ve been meaning to say this since we first met don’t you think we look alike?”
In that moment, I’d never felt so humiliated. With her triumphant look, all I could do was. turn and flee. Back in the room, my coworkers‘ warmth started to thaw my frozen blood. Just as I was pushing aside that unpleasant encounter, the door swung open.
Nathan froze at the sight of two tables full of people, then his eyes locked with mine. I saw barely contained anger in his gaze, though I couldn’t understand why.
He clenched his fists before calling my name, ordering me outside. Confused, I followed him out, only to be struck hard across the face in the hallway.
It was the first time he’d ever hit me.
As I stared at him in shock, he showed no guilt or hesitation – just pure rage.
“Why did you push Sophie? You knew her ankle was hurt! I said I’d explain everything when I got back, but you had to handle it like this?”
My cheek stung from the slap.
In the distance, Sophie limped toward us, her blouse rumpled and stained. Just as I opened my mouth to explain, she collapsed dramatically.
Without a second thought, Nathan pushed past me and rushed to her, gathering her in his
arms.
“I told her I’d bring you to apologize. Why did you come after her?” he said softly.
Though his words sounded like a rebuke, his voice was gentle.
Sophie looked up at him with tears in her eyes, shaking her head. “It’s not a big deal – she probably didn’t mean to. Don’t be so harsh with her.”

Chapter 4
“If her brother finds out you hit her, it might damage your friendship,” she added.
At the mention of my brother, something flickered across Nathan’s face, but his expression hardened as he looked back at Sophie.
“Her brother trusted her to my care. It’s my responsibility to correct her behavior,” he said firmly.
I let out a bitter laugh. “What exactly did I do wrong? Even in court, you need evidence to rivict someone. Have you considered how unfair it is to judge and strike me without knowing the truth?”
Nathan’s fists tightened as he glared at me.
“You knew there were no cameras in the restroom. You thought you could get away with it.”
The injustice of it all was both laughable and painful.
“If there are no cameras, how can you be so sure it was me?”
“Why would Sophie lie about this? She must have a reason. Besides, I’ve known her for years she’s not the type to make things up.”
“And I am?” My voice barely concealed the bitterness.
After seven years together, I thought he would at least trust my character. I was wrong. front of Sophie, seven years meant nothing.
In
One word from her was enough to condemn me, without even a chance to defend myself.
His bias was so obvious it hurt. And I finally saw myself clearly nothing but a replacement, a stand–in with nothing real to offer.
Seeing no point in arguing further, I turned to leave, ignoring Nathan’s angry demands to stay.
With my cheek still burning from his slap, I didn’t want to ruin my coworkers‘ mood. Instead of returning to the private room, I went to the front desk, paid the bill, and sent them a message:
came up had to leave Lamch is on me. Enjoy
