Chapter 9
I looked at James uncertainly. “So you saw everything?”
“Yes.”
Nathan, noticing our closeness, got up from the ground, his eyes red. “Who is he?”
James seemed determined to provoke him, tightening his arm around my waist. “Her…
fiancé.”
“Lies! Let go of her! Olivia, he’s lying, right? You’re just doing this to get back at me?”
“The nerve of this guy…” my brother’s voice came from behind us, making Nathan step back instinctively.
James and I turned to see Mark approaching, casually swinging a baseball bat.
I moved to stop him, but James held me back with his arm around my waist.
“What are you doing? My brother can be brutal!”
James chuckled, “Don’t worry. I’m here; he won’t go too far.” He pulled out his phone and made a quick call. “Outside the Blake residence. Have an ambulance on standby.”
I was speechless.
Nathan’s face hardened as he looked from my brother back to me. “Olivia, we haven’t broken up yet, have we? Our relationship isn’t over. Even if he is your fiancé, you should
break it off.”
My brother smirked and swung the bat at Nathan’s leg without warning. Nathan screamed, dropping to the ground.
“Been listening from inside. Bad enough you lied to my sister, but you had the nerve to hit her, Nathan? Don’t ever call me your friend again.”

He struck again, drawing another groan from Nathan, who kept his eyes fixed on me despite the pain, trying to crawl closer.
“Stop, Mark. That’s enough,” I said firmly.
My brother paused mid swing.
Nathan laughed weakly, “See? You still care about me, Olivia. You can’t let go, can you?”
pulled away from James, walked over to Nathan, and crouched in front of him. Then, without hesitation, I slapped him hard across the face.
“That pays back your slap. We’re even now.”
“As for saying we never officially broke up – I didn’t think it was necessary. You never acknowledged me as your girlfriend in the first place. What was there to end?”
“Let me be clear, Nathan – I don’t love you anymore. Don’t look for me again.”
With that, I grabbed my brother’s arm and started pulling him back toward the house.
He resisted, “Want me to catch a murder charge for this loser?” I snapped.
Grinding his teeth, Mark threw down the bat, but not before landing a few solid punches to Nathan’s face.
Once he’d had enough, James signaled to someone, and four paramedics quickly arrived with a stretcher to take Nathan away.
As we turned to head inside, Nathan suddenly called out to James. “I was with her for seven years. Doesn’t that disgust you?”
Both James and Mark whipped around. I quickly grabbed my brother, but James’s reaction
surprised me.
He walked over, placed his foot on Nathan’s injured leg, and pressed down.
“You’re a disgrace to men. Don’t worry – I’ll make sure you watch her live a life so good you’ll choke on your jealousy.”

Then he nodded to the paramedics. “Take him
Once Nathan was gone, James turned hack, taking my hand gently.
“Skip breakfast at home. I’m taking you shopping,” he said with a calm smile.
I blinked, stunned. After everything that just happened, he didn’t ask questions or say anything else just wanted to take me shopping?
why?” I had to ask.
He glanced back at me. “My mom says shopping helps women feel better when they’re
upset.”
My brother suddenly jumped in. “I’m upset too. Take me shopping!”
James smoothly kicked him aside and whisked me away.
In the car, I tried to explain everything to him, but he just said, “The past is the past. I don’t want you reopening old wounds. Trust me – none of that matters to me.”
“Though I did like what you said about me being ‘a man of integrity.‘ Say more nice things
about me.”
