Chapter 8

I paced back and forth in the dimly lit room, the sound of my heels clicking against the floor doing little to calm the storm inside me. How? How had everything gone so wrong?

Landon was supposed to be mine. I had worked so hard and sacrificed so much, and yet here I was, watching it all fall apart right before my eyes. I had given him the potion, dose after dose, carefully timed and perfectly measured. But it hadn‘ t worked. Somehow, even after all my efforts, he still resisted. He still wanted her.
I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms as I thought of Callie. That woman–that weak, undeserving woman- had somehow stolen what should have been mine. She had always been in my way, ever since I first laid eyes on Landon.
I remembered the day clearly, the day I first saw him. He was everything I had ever

wanted, strong, successful, and powerful despite being a human. He had that air about him, the kind that made you want to be close to him, to bask in his attention. But the moment I approached him, I was rejected. Coldly. Dismissively. As if I was nothing.
That day, I made a vow. I would become someone he couldn‘ t ignore. Someone he couldn’t say no to.
I looked in the mirror, tracing the features of my face. I had spent months perfecting the transformation, altering my appearance to resemble someone Landon would never turn away–his sister. I knew how close they had been, how much he loved and protected her. If I could remind him of her, even subconsciously, then surely, he would be drawn to me.
It had worked. For a while, everything had been perfect. I had slipped into his life so seamlessly, and Callie… Callie had been none the wiser. Landon barely noticed me

at first, but I was patient. I bided my time, slipping the potion into his drinks and his food. Slowly, he started to change. He became more comfortable around me, spending more time with me and even confiding in me. I thought I had him.
But then Callie left. I still didn’t know exactly what had happened between them, but Landon… he started pulling away from me, becoming distant, cold, as if he had woken up from some dream I had spun around him.
I slammed my fist against the table, my frustration boiling over.
Why hadn’t it worked? How could he have
resisted?
I could feel the rage bubbling inside me, threatening to spill over as I thought of all the time I had wasted, all the careful
planning, all the sacrifices I had made. And for what? For him to look at me like I was nothing more than a stranger now?

No. I wasn’t going to let it end like this. If I couldn’t have him… then no one could.
That was when the idea came to me. Callie. Of course. She was the problem. She had always been the problem, standing in my way. Even now, with her gone, Landon still couldn’t forget about her. She had to be dealt with.
I smirked, my mind already formulating a plan. I had to finish this once and for all. I reached for my phone, scrolling through my contacts until I found Callie’s number. I hesitated for only a second before pressing the call.
The phone rang twice before she answered, her voice cautious. “Daisy? Why are you calling me?”
I plastered on my sweetest voice, trying to sound as innocent as possible. “Callie, I think we need to talk. I… I owe you an apology. Things between us have been tense, and I’d like to clear the air.”

There was a pause on the other end. I could tell she didn’t trust me, but that didn’t matter. She didn’t need to trust me for this to work.
“What do you want, Daisy?”
“I just want to talk,” I said, forcing sincerity into my tone. “Please, meet me. I think it’s time we finally settle things.”
Another pause. I held my breath.
…Fine. Where?”
I smiled to myself, the plan already falling into place. “There’s a café near the park. I’ll send you the address.”
After we hung up, I felt a surge of satisfaction. This was it. This was how it would end. I would meet her, and we would settle this once and for all. She had taken everything from me, but I was going to take it all back.
As I prepared for our meeting, I couldn’t help but feel a twisted sense of glee.

Landon was mine. He just didn’t know it
yet.
And after tonight, there would be no one left to stand in my way.
