Thanks to our team’s incredible efficiency, we finished what was supposed
to be six months of work in just three.
On the day I returned home, I made sure to post on Instagram.
When I arrived at the house, I saw Verity lounging on the couch, while Dax fed her a strawberry. She bit off just the tip and shoved the rest into his
mouth.
I stood there, expressionless, watching their little display of affection

before asking, “Dax, it’s Monday. Don’t you have work?”
“I quit, sis,” Dax replied casually.
Verity shot me a smug, sideways glance, clearly enjoying the power trip. She pointed lazily at the oranges on the table, and Dax immediately peeled
one, sliced it, and handed it to her.
He added, “I didn’t want to leave everything to the housekeeper. Verity’s pregnancy has been tough, so I’m here to help.”
Dax had been working at Montgomery Enterprises, and just last year, Dad had talked about giving him more responsibilities at the company. But Dax had decided that taking care of his pregnant wife was more important, and I couldn’t say much about that.
I walked towards my bedroom, only to be greeted by the blaring sound of
music.
Was there someone in there?
I pushed the door open and saw a man, shirtless, lying on my bed, playing a video game.
He turned to me with a greasy grin.
“You have three seconds to get out of my house, or I’m calling the police.” I
pointed to the door, my voice cold.
Dax rushed over, trying to calm me down. “Sis, this is Verity’s brother, Talon. He came to Summersville to visit her.”
“Why is he in my room when there’s a perfectly fine quest suite?”

I opened my closet–sure enough, my clothes had been rummaged
through, and my underwear drawer was a mess. My jewelry box looked like it was missing something, too.
“Who gave him permission to stay in my room?”
Verity sauntered in from the living room, her nose in the air. “The guest
room’s too small. My brother’s not used to it, so I thought he’d be more
comfortable in yours. What’s the big deal?”
Talon, now dressed in a t–shirt, chimed in with a cocky smirk. “I don’t visit often, and a bigger room is no big deal, right? Besides, isn’t it a waste for a single woman to have such a nice house?”
Dax, trying to mediate, quietly said, “Sis, I didn’t think you’d be home today. Don’t be upset.”
I didn’t waste any time. I pulled out my phone and dialed 911. Dax quickly grabbed it from my hands.
“Sis, what are you doing? It’s just a room! Is this really necessary?”

“Of course it is. Someone stole from me. My Cartier bracelet, the one Mom gave me for my birthday–it’s gone. That’s grand theft, Dax. Five thousand dollars is enough to get someone three to ten years.”
I glanced at Talon, whose expression immediately turned nervous.
Verity’s face twisted in anger. “It’s just a bracelet! I’ll replace it, okay? Dax, transfer the money to your crazy sister and get her out of here, or I swear I’ll lose this baby.”

“Dax, this is my house. If anyone’s leaving, it’s them.”
With that, I threw Talon’s clothes and luggage out the door and shoved him
after them. I slammed the door in his face.
Outside, Verity started wailing. “Dax! Do you see how your sister’s treating me? She wants to send my brother to jail! How can she be this cruel? I can’t live under the same roof as her. Either she goes, or I’m leaving, and I’m
taking the baby with me.”
Dax had never been very good at his job. Even though Dad had wanted to give him a bigger role in the company, he still preferred me when it came to running things. That’s why he had only bought Dax one house. As for me, aside from the house my parents gave me, I bought myself an apartment
downtown with my own money.
Unfortunately, I had to move out of that apartment because my neighbor, a jealous trophy wife, accused me of trying to seduce her husband just because he glanced at me twice.
From outside, I could hear Dax trying to calm Verity down. “Why don’t we move back in with Mom and Dad? The house is huge, and there are plenty of staff. It’d be perfect for the baby.”
Mom had wanted them to move back for a while. She wasn’t thrilled about Verity, but she was still her daughter–in–law and pregnant with her grandchild, so Mom thought she deserved a bit of extra care. But Verity had
refused.
“No way! I’m not living with old people. Your parents are relics, and I’m not risking their bad influence on my baby’s intelligence. I love this house, and I’m not leaving. Figure out a way to get your sister out.”

Talon piped up in his usual arrogant tone, “Dax, is this how your family treats my sister? No wonder she needed me here for backup. She’s clearly suffered in this house. And don’t forget, you’re the son. Everything in the Montgomery family belongs to you. Your sister’s just a woman. She’s only trying to steal what’s rightfully yours.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous they both sounded.
Verity’s a woman too, isn’t she? I couldn’t imagine what kind of family
raised people like this.
Verity was a victim of this “old–school” mentality, and instead of rising above it, she was using it against other women.
I never imagined Dax would let himself be so manipulated by them.
