Dax spent the entire afternoon trying to calm Verity down, but nothing
worked.
Verity pouted, “My brother came to see me and was wrongfully accused of
theft. How are you going to make it up to him?”
Eventually, Dax agreed to buy Talon a car just to stop the drama.
Later that day, Dax transferred five thousand dollars to my account and
sent me a message:
[Talon wasn’t trying to steal anything. He just thought the bracelet was nice and wanted to get one for his girlfriend. He didn’t know where to buy it, so he took it to ask around. He wasn’t trying to rob you.]

[And by the way, sis, aren’t you staying single just so you can get more of the Montgomery family’s inheritance? Even though you’re more capable than me, Dad’s definitely leaving the company to me.]
Reading his texts, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
For a moment, I even wondered if Verity had sent the message herself.
This was my brother–the person I’d grown up with for over 20 years. And this is what he thought of me?
That’s when I finally realized why Dax had married someone like Verity.
They were two peas in a pod.
As I mulled over how Dax could have changed so much, Verity knocked on
my door holding a box of Bvlgari jewelry.
“Sis, I know you’ve never really liked me. I used to be so clueless and
spoiled because Dax always gave me everything. But I’ve learned my lesson,
I’ll behave from now on. Please, let us stay here. I promise I won’t cause any
more trouble.”
Her face was a little puffy from the pregnancy, and she had a forced smile
on her face.
I glanced at the expensive necklace and bracelet in the box, then at her
swollen belly. My expression didn’t change as I said, “If you want to stay,
keep quiet and focus on your pregnancy. And keep your outdated views to
yourself. No one told you that you should respect your elders? My parents are your parents now, too. Stop stirring up drama between Dax and the family.”

Verity nodded furiously. “You’re right, Isla. I’ll do better from now on. No more acting spoiled or causing trouble.”
I gave her a glance. “Take your jewelry with you. I don’t want it.”
“I knew you wouldn’t hold it against me,” she replied sweetly before slipping out and closing the door softly behind her.
There was no way I believed Verity would actually behave and act humbly.
Quiet enemies are the most dangerous. I was curious to see what Verity’s
next move would be.
