The moment I stepped inside, I found Verity waiting for me in the living
room.
When she saw me standing there, completely unharmed, Prada bag in hand, she froze. Her face was full of confusion and surprise.
Tentatively, she asked, “Sis, nothing happened to you today, did it?”
“What’s the matter? Were you hoping something would?” I shot back with a

Verity clearly had a million questions but didn’t dare voice them. She forced a smile. “No, no, you misunderstood me. I just wanted to say your bag looks great.”
I cut her off with a question of my own, “Your due date’s in about a week,
right?”
“Yes,” she replied, her hands instinctively resting on her large belly. “Next week, I’ll be giving the Montgomery family their first grandson. The doctor says the baby is perfectly healthy.”
I smiled. By next week, Talon’s case would be all over the news. Verity
would have no choice but to see it.
Her role in helping Talon commit those crimes would be enough to send her to jail, but I figured I’d wait until she gave birth. The child was innocent,
after all.
