On the day I got the divorce certificate, Alex and I headed straight for the station to return to ar hometown.
The city we confidently set out to conquer at eighteen, only to abandon at twenty–eight The journey was long, a grueling twenty–four–hour train ride followed by a bus, but the distance felt less daunting with Alex’s presence.
Alex went to get hot water, returning with an acquaintance..

He hadn’t changed much, still the same carefree soul, approaching thirty yet still lacking a hint of maturity.
He bent down, teasing me.
“Well, well, if it isn’t our little crybaby, Millie. Still such a scaredy–car? Don’t go running to your big brother for help now!”
Alex chuckled beside him. Even before reaching home, a familiar warmth enveloped me, transforming me into the carefree girl who once trailed behind my brother. Then, along the way, we gained an extra partner who was talkative, and the journey was not as long and boring as imagined.
Gu Yuan, like Alex and I, was also escaping the city, returning to his roots. His business had failed years ago.
After settling his debts, he declared he was simply worn out and just wanted to
go back home.
We were all, in our own ways, escaping.

We exchanged numbers. Alex and Gu Yuan hit it off immediately, already discussing business ventures, joking about starting a joint enterprise back home. That seemingly casual conversation would soon blossom into something far greater.
