After hearing that, Katie’s carefully constructed composure crumbled. A wave of fear washed over her, her body trembling violently as she clung to Lucian.
Her beautiful face was covered with tears, and her shoulders trembled slightly.
She seemed helpless, and could only hold on to the sleeve of Lucian in front of her.
“What if Alex hurts us? What if he hurts Lily?”
Lily began to cry, her small voice filled with terror.“Daddy, please keep that bad man away from us, forever!”
I had almost reached the exit when their cries registered. I paused, a surge of anger overriding my better judgment. I spun around, approaching them. Before Katie could react, I struck her across the face, twice.
“Katie, your games are over. If you dare to harm Alex again, I swear I will destroy you. You know exactly how he ended up there. Don’t think you’ll get away with it a second time.”
Katie, speechless, could only shake her head, her face a mask of terror. Lucian, his voice, hardening, stepped between us.
“Enough, Millie. Katie was the victim. She’s frightened. And Alex… he got what he deserved.” I knew I shouldn’t cause a scene, especially with Alex’s release imminent. But I couldn’t bear anymore..
Another slap landed, this time on Lucian’s cheek.
His mouth twisted into a painful grimace. Then, his expression shifted, an overwhelming wave of tenderness sweeping over his features. He pushed Katie and then pulled me into his embrace, his voice a hushed whisper, “Don’t cry, Millie. I don’t blame you.”
