Chapter 10
Evelynne
It took me barely few minutes of deep contemplation to mentally accept going on with what was on my mind.
I was thinking of a way, any way at all, to hold onto Rhysand, as he was the most suitable person for my purposes.

He has the power to bring down Desmond, the influence to get the informations I needed, and more than enough money to achieve my goals. And also a face that rivalled Desmond’s.
His brows squeezed into a frown, there was a flicker of emotion in those eyes of his, but before I could point them out, it was gone, “I made it clear already that I’m not interested in any of your offers, so what now?”
“You might be interested in this one,”
“I don’t have time for this.”
“Just cut me few minutes of your time. And if this isn’t convincing enough then I’ll leave you alone,” He frowned, as if contemplating on my words.
“I don’t have the patience to wait any longer,” he glanced down to the watch strapped to his wrist.
Rhysand reached out for something in his car, before he handed a small card to me, “Bring your offer there.” He stated, and I stared down at the business card in my hand.
“Okay” I took a step back from the car.
He wanted me to come meet him at his company, I thought about it for some minutes before I decided that, that might not be the best idea, Besides, what I had to say was not supposed to take much of his time if he’ll just let me state it.
“Well…” I drawled about to convince him to spare me at least five minutes of his time.
“Evie!” I heard Elli’s voice call out to me and I glanced up from the car, over to the direction the voice came from.
My eyes landed on Elli who had a panicked expression on his face, before it trailed down to the woman he carried in his arms. Squinting my eyes to have a better look, a sharp stabbing ache shot through my chest when I noticed it was mom he was carrying.
My mind clouded with worries and I completely forgot about talking with Rhysand as my legs moved on its own and I rushed over to where he stood, “What happened?”
“She fainted. She was crying so hard when I got into the hall.” He responded, with a voice filled with more panic than I could fathom, his eyes stared over my head, “Pick the keys from my pocket, we need to rush to the hospital,” he said and before he could finish his statement, my hand was already in his pocket.
I quickly retrieved the keys and followed behind Elli as we walked over to his car, my heart raced with concern and fear.
I opened the door to the back seat and he gently placed her at the back, before ushering me in, soon as I entered, I placed mom’s head on my lap and stared deep into her solemn face.
This is not good, considering this was a constant occurrence whenever she was highly panicked, or agitated.
Elli got into the car, and soon enough we were driving out of the mansion’s driveway, my eyes drifted outside and fell on the black car still parked on the other side of the driveway.

Chapter 10
The card he had given me crumpled in my fisted palms as we sped towards the hospital.

Mom’s frail face, pale and gaunt, seemed to accentuate her whole existence. Her chest rose and fell with labored breaths, and her eyes remained shut. An unwelcoming memory of something about the past hit me.
I brushed away my tears. I shouldn’t have left her alone in the hall, but my desperation to stay out of the same breathing space as Desmond and Gabriella led me to leaving her there all alone.
Elli’s voice broke the silence, “She’ll be okay.”
“I know,” I said, trying to muster some hope. Mom’s mental and emotional battles were far from over and it was all too much.
“She really wanted you to get married to Desmond,” Elli continued.
Of course I knew about that, that has been my mom’s dream and wish ever since I started dating Desmond – and I had no reason why she adored him so much for me.
“Yes, but I can’t stay with Desmond again, and I won’t. Knowing what he’s doing behind my back.” And also knowing about the fact that my life will end in tragedy if I stayed with him.
“I’m not saying you should go back to him,” Elli pointed out, briefly glancing up at the rear view mirror to have a look at my expression. “I don’t like Desmond to begin with and I’m very happy that you rejected him as your mate. All I’m saying is, mom seems to want to see you end up with someone before her panic attacks gets the best of her someday that she wouldn’t be able to handle it anymore.” He cleared this throat.
“There’s no one I’m getting along with right now.”
“I know, but she might remain assured if there’s a man with you. Just saying, at least with that we’ll be able to avoid her panic and anxiety attacks.”
Ell didn’t need to go further cause I already could tell were he was heading to. My eyes lowered down to my mom’s solemn expression.
What do I do?
As we arrived at the hospital, the medical team rushed to attend to her and we stood at the receptionist feeling helpless as they wheeled her away.
Elli gently pressed his hands on my shoulders, drifting me back to where we were.
Thirty minutes later, we stood outside the hospital ward she was wheeled into, patiently waiting for the doctor to come out and tell us how she was fairing. I paced around the hall, while Elli sat on the chair, resting his head on the wall with his eyes closed.
After what felt like ages, the door was finally opened and a female doctor clad in white coat stepped out, her eyes landed on me before shifting to Desmond, “How’s she?” Elli asked.
“We did some test, and just like your presumptions, it was another anxiety attack. Also, we noticed a few scratch marks on her and there were some cigarette burns on her shoulders,” she explained with a frown, fixing her glasses to the bridge of her nose, “Other than the fresh new wounds, there’s nothing else and she should be okay in the next few hours, so stay rest assured. Doctor Trish said with a warm smile and reassuring words, that only scratched the surface.
My eyes landed on Elli’s own that trailed to mine at the same time, I pressed my lips into a thin line knowing fully well that the Doctor’s words spanned far from the surface.
