Chapter 16

When I heard her say she had other prospects, I couldn’t help the pang in my chest. Reason cause I was tied to her, while she could do whatever she wanted.
So for that, I decided to make rules.
She shifted on her chair, “I’ll also make rules.”
I rose my brows suspiciously at her, “What rules?” something told me this wouldn’t be what I wanted to hear.
“No physical touch between us beyond unnecessary touch.” My fingers stilled on the keyboard and I glanced up from the screen of my laptop, meeting her serious gaze.
“What do you mean by no physical touch?” I rose a brow in her direction.
“I meant no physical touch,” she shrugged, “Except only necessary. Necessary in the fact that there’s a public and we are doing it cause of them,” hearing her explanation made me realize I didn’t have much say in that.
I knew this would be bad right from start, and although I don’t plan on touching her, placing a rule of no touch pierced me more than needed.
With a hesitant nod, I accepted, “Alright.”
She stood up from the couch once again, picking her purse from the chair, “Well, I guess that’s all…” she trailed, and spaced out as if in deep thought.
“Aren’t we making a contract then, placing our rules on them? since this is an agreement bound to end in two years?” she asked.
Two years, she said. Just two years.
“No need for a contract.”
“Okay, if you say so. But I’ll like to place a fine if incase any rule is broken,” she suddenly said.
“A fine?” I asked and she nodded, her emerald green eyes brightened and I noticed the little way her eyes moved.
“How much?”
She pondered on it for a while, subtly tapping her chin with her small slender fingers, “Let’s keep it at 5000 dollars. If I break a rule, I’ll pay. If you break a rule, then you pay.”
“Too small.”
“What? the money?” she frowned.
“Yes.”
“Well, how about 10000 dollars,” she suggested.
“Small.”

Her eyes widened subtly, “Small to you, alone. That’s no small money to me,” she frowned, “I’m not increasing it more than
that.”
“Why should the cost be a bother to you? you plan on breaking some rules?” I asked, tilting my head to watch the change in her expression.
“No, I don’t, but just in case. Rules are bound to be broken. And I’m trying be on the safe side. But that doesn’t mean I won’t abide by them,” she shrugged, and hesitation flickered in her eyes, before she added “Let’s leave it at 20,000 dollars then”
“Good.”
“Time to leave,” She said as she glanced down at her phone before looking up and giving me a small smile and then turning around and heading towards the door.
As my gaze fell on the hypnotic sway of her hips, all rational thought abandoned me.
Fuck.
A tortured groan tore from my lips, and my eyes clenched shut in an attempt to shut out the temptation.
‘Mate.‘ A low, raspy voice echoed in
my
mind.
I froze, stunned. My eyes snapped open when I heard the sound of my inner wolf. A frown crept its way to my face at the realization.
Dax had been dormant for so long, I thought he was gone forever. Yet, here he was ringing words into my head and his hunger for her seemed undeniable.
Ah, no. This is bad.
I tried to resist, but my voice betrayed me, growling out the question, “When next are we meeting?”
Evelynne halted to a stop before turning around, she thought about it for a while before muttering, “Tomorrow. We can finalize everything then.”
“Okay, you can leave.” My voice came out raspy than I had intended and she must have noticed because she rose a brow at
- me.
Turning my gaze away, I stared down at my laptop, “I’ll be here by nine then,” she finally said after a while.
“Nine? I’ll busy by then. Make it eight prompt.”
“Considering I’m traveling from a different city, arriving by eight prompt will be very uncomfortable for me.” She muttered to my hearing.
“You are heading back to Lakeville today?” I turned to look at her.
Her lips pressed into a thin line and she nodded.
“How would this work out if you are an hour plus couple minutes away from here?” I mindlessly tapped the pen in my fingers on the table.
“Well, I was thinking about getting an apartment here,” she muttered.
“I’ll have someone work that out,” the word were out of my lips before I could consider them, and I subtly clenched at the slip of control.

“Oh, that’s considerate of you,” considerate my foot, I was doing all this to my advantage, “Thank you!” she beamed and her eyes sparkled, unfortunately doing a trick down
my heart.
I nodded.
“Goodbye,” she gave me a polite nod, before returning around, and finally walking out the door.
Soon as she was out, I stood up from the chair and walked over to the window, shutting my eyes and releasing a deep breath to calm the raging nerves inside me.
I was going through torture and she had not even the slightest idea about it.
For someone that had to wait for years before I could find my mate, this was bitterly inconsiderate of the moon goddess.
My mind wandered off to our conversation earlier and I wondered why she wanted to bring down her mate and also why she had chosen to reject him in a large crowd.
I barely knew much about Evelynne, but she reminded me of a closed journal, whispering secrets to only herself while searching for something with her eyes. Her motives were something I knew nothing of. Her thoughts and intentions were securely tightened and she was overly cautious of letting anyone find out.
Yet, despite knowing all this, I was interested in helping her even without a reason.
ough, a tiny part of me wanted her to share her intentions to me.
I shouldn’t have any business with her, but here I was entangling us with the only chance I might ever come across.
She smiled brightly, hiding away the demons hiding under the depths in her eyes.
Evelynne was an enigma, that I was desperate to unravel without a logical reason.
Just then, a loud knock at the door broke the silence in the office, and before I could respond, the door swung open.
Without a doubt, I knew it was Xavier.
He strode into the office like he owned it, flashing me a smile, “Sorry I forgot to wait for a response,” he raised his hands in the air before I got the chance to complain.
“I don’t recall you ever waiting for a response from day one.”
“Well, well, you caught me there,” he flashed me a grin, “I usually don’t have the patience to wait for a response after knocking.”
“You better learn to.” He remained unfazed with the glare directed to him.
“By the way, how was your conversation with Evelynne?”
“None of your business, Xavier.”
“Such a pissy mood,” he brushed a hand through his hair and walked over to the other side of the office to pick a bottle of water, before uncapping it.
I subconsciously tapped the pen in my fingers on the windowsill, ignoring Xavier who was walking around my office looking
for God knows what.
“My dad sent me here to get the files for the construction project. Where are they? I can’t find them here,” he rummaged

through the files on my table
Still staring outside the city skyline, 1 responded, “Check the file drawer behind my dad?
“Alright” he muttered as he paced over to the drawer,
His steps came to a halt, and 1 assumed he found what he was here for, but then be witherby which
“Why the hell are you searching for different shades of emerdd green eyes? Vis question threw me off the Kiser and 1 turned around.
“What do you mean?”
He pointed towards my laptop with a frown. I walked over to the table, only to come to a screeching halt when my eyes noticed the page I had opened.
Ah, fuck,
