Chapter 17
Evelynne:
Contentment filled me by the time I arrived at the city, and it dawned on me that ever since the moment I had rejected Desmond, every single thing wasn’t going the same way as it did in my past life.
The Crystal Pack members were none of my
business to worry about.

I barely cared about whether Desmond and Gabriella were still sleeping with one another even after I rejected him.
And a whole lot of happiness filled me.
Maybe. Just maybe my second life would ring different from the first. Cause I really didn’t want to die the way I did before.
I was adamant on twisting for a change.
Which was one of the reasons I had chosen an ally without thinking. Picking one of the most rumored, horrible men out of the Alpha leaders.
Recalling my conversation with Rhysand brought a smile to my face.
Rumors had it that he has was horrible, calculative and manipulative, but he respected my offer and agreed to them without trying to play a smart card. Maybe I really should stop believing these rumors just like he said.
Sitting at the cafe store close to my apartment, I stared absentmindedly at two numbers on my phone. Considering it was already late in the afternoon by 4pm, Elli should have picked Mom home already.
I contemplated on whether to call him and ask about her wellbeing, or call her directly.
Despite
our little argument yesterday, it dawned on me that someone had to break the ice between my mom and I.
A while later, a heavy breath released out of my lips and I swiped her contact info before pressing dial.
The phone rang for a while, but there was no answer.
“Should I get you the usual?” the barista’s, voice brought my wandering thoughts back.
Dull brown eyes were deeply rooted on me, “yes, black coffee would do,” he nodded, and went on to prepare my
order.
My gaze lingered on his brunette hair and tall frame as he turned his back to me. The docile scent in the cafe calmed my senses and I subconsciously relaxed.
A low growl from my tummy reminded me that I’ve had nothing to eat at all today, “Can I get muffins along with it?” The young boy nodded, “Alright, give me a sec.”
While waiting for my order, I decided to call my mom one last time for the day, so I dialed once again.
My eyes stayed rooted on the screen as it rang. Once. Twice… Th- and before the third ring, the call was answered.
“Hey, mom. How are you?” I said, bringing the phone to my ears and deciding to just ask about her well being and also not say anything that might agitate her.
She ignored my greetings, “Where are you, Evie?”

Chapter 17
“Huh?”
“I said, where are you, Evelynne!” her voice shuddered from the other end.
“What’s going on, mom?” My brows tightened in worry, “are you alright?”
“Alright?” she drawled, “You expect me to be alright knowing my only daughter is getting publicly shamed and is one day into being banished because she decided to make very silly decisions without my consent? her voice cracked with a wave of
worry.
“What?” I frowned, “What do you mean? what’s going on?”
Although I had an inkling feeling that after wounding Desmond’s pride in the ceremony yesterday, he’ll fight back, I never expected it to be this early.
Mom broke into sobs from the other end, “They took my Elli away,” My heart dropped to my stomach, and before she could tell me what was going on, I picked my purse from the cafe counter and stepped out of the place. Completely forgetting my order along with the barista’s call to me.
“Tell me what’s going on mom? where are you? where’s Elli?” with every question I asked, fear enveloped me.
Mom struggled to find words and after. a while, she finally said, “Elli brought me back home from the hospital this afternoon. We were having lunch together when some men barged into the house,” she formed incoherent words as she broke into tears.
“Then what happened?” Immediately flagging a taxi, I got into it.
“Th–then some men came to get you, they were sent by the Alpha,” she sniffed, “they–they asked for you, and Elli told them you weren’t around,” she paused, crying heavily into the phone that a wave of guilt engulfed me.
“So, th–they…” The call died without a sound and I stared at my phone in shock, realizing that the battery was out.
Jeez, no. Of all times, why now.
My lips quivered in worry and my hands desperately clutched around my phone.
I gave the driver the house address to my mom’s place and he drove me there.
It took me almost twenty minutes before I arrived at the Avenue street.
Immediately after stepping out and paying for the fare, I walked straight to house number 44, and rang the doorbell.
A minute later, the door was opened and my eyes were welcomed with the hurting sight of my mother’s blood shot red eyes.
“Mom, are you okay?” I reached out to touch her shoulders and embrace her but she wiped my hands away, before stepping back and staring at me with ‘this is all your fault‘ written all over her expression.
Taking a deep breath, my eyes met hers and I asked, “Where was he taken to? Do you have any idea?”
“This is all your fault,” she accused and I felt like a thorn was being pierced into my heart.
“I know, mom.” I admitted, with a full load of guild crashing down my chest.
Despite all I had said to her yesterday, she didn’t understand me. She never did. And I doubted she ever will.
“You always disappoint me, Evie,” she sobbed, tears slid from her eyes continuosly, “Why? why can’t you just be like Elli?“she

asked, and my lips pressed into a thin line, cause I had no answer to that, “Why can’t you just be exactly like him,” she added and I still had no idea how to respond.
I watched her shoulders tremble with every words she said, and I wondered if she could see the turmoil raging inside me.
“Just tell me where he was taken to mom,” a deep breathe escaped from my lips, “I’ll go and get him,” I assured her, scanning her tired expression and the dark circles under her eyes.
“They didn’t say where they’ll take him to. All they said was they’ll wait till you arrive before he is released,” she said, taking a step back to avoid my touch on her shoulders.
My shoulders slumped, and with a nod of my head, I turned around, “I’ll go and get your Elli, mom. They won’t do anything to him, I’m the one they want.” Even as I uttered that I’ll go get my brother in exchange of myself, mom didn’t say any single thing.
But I felt her gaze follow me down to the streets, before I boarded a taxi.
Taking a deep breath, and swatting away all worries from my mind, I swiped to my call logs and gazed deeply at Desmond’s number, before pressing dial.
The phone rang in my hands as if mirroring the constant ring in my heart, and after five rings, the call was answered. “You’ve been ignoring my calls, and now you are calling?” Desmond’s voice filled my ear and I felt my body shudder.
“I’ll come over, so please can you let my brother go?” I asked in a low tone.
A rough chuckle from the other end filled my ears, and he told me to head straight to the pack house.
“Alright, I’m on my way.”
