Chapter 20
Evelynne:
“I called you numerous number of times but it wasn’t going through, what happened?” I heard Elli’s voice filter through my small apartment as he welcomed himself in later that night.
The pitter patter of rain drops on my rooftop signified the downpour outside.
I realized I had been sitting on a stool in the kitchen for close to an hour, staring at my bowl of cereal laying on the counter but not eating from it.
I wasn’t hungry, but my stomach felt empty–and for some reason, I felt empty too.
“You know…” Elli’s voice trailed as he found his way into the kitchen, and his warm eyes landed on me, “You really should learn to always lock your doors. Anyone with harmful intentions could walk in if they wanted to.” He pointed out before sitting on the stool beside me.
“It’s just 9pm,” I tried to shove his worries off. I knew my doors should always be locked when I’m alone at home, but it usually skips my mind to lock it.
He stared at me, “9pm is late enough already. Very late.” He reached for my bowl of cereal which was now cold already, and he picked another bowl, pouring cereal in it and adding warm water from the jug placed on the counter, before pushing it towards my side.
“Thank you,” I smiled at him and he nodded.
Elli loved his cereal cold, and I loved mine warm.
Water streamed down his forehead, and he dusted the droplets of water on his ash colored jacket before removing it and placing it on the counter.
“Why weren’t you answering my calls earlier,” he picked a spoon and munched down the cereal.
“My phone switched off. Down on battery,” I answered before glancing back down to the bowl placed in front of me.
The incident from earlier this afternoon was still at the back of my mind and I was desperately trying to keep it there, cause I didn’t want to remember at all.
Remembering what occured would just fuel my rage, and that was the last thing I needed right now. Allowing my anger to take control over my emotions would make me decide on sour choices on what to do to Desmond.
My eyes closed in an attempt to recall something from my past life. Anything at all that I could use against him.
Desmond was involved in variety of things that is worthy to bring him down as an Alpha, but I pondered on the very delicately strong ones, cause they were more helpful.
But while I was dwelling on Desmond, I couldn’t forget about Gabriella also–she was, after all, the main person that stabbed me with Ill intentions. While Desmond was the major reason behind why everything got to that extent.
I would handle her on my own. She wasn’t a big threat like Desmond.
“Did they do anything to you?” I asked Elli after a couple minute of silence between us.
“No, they didn’t,” he frowned, before turning his gaze to me, “I should be asking you that question. Mom told me you were

out to get me.”
I shook my head, trying to case his building worry, “Nothing happened. We just talked.
He furrowed his brows at me, “By we, you mean?”
48%
“Desmond and 1,” I replied, and finally took a spoon of cereal to my mouth, which made me fail to notice the expression on Elli’s face.
“Did he do anything to you?” his voice came out in a panicked tone and I turned to meet his eyes that were slowly burning with fear and fury.
“He didn’t.” I assured him, and he slowly nodded.
Then, there was silence between us once again.
There were a lot of things to say but little to be expressed, and Elli seemed to be threading gently.
He wanted to keep the vital questions aside first, but he also wanted to ask about them. For example, why I had rejected Desmond.
He cleared his throat, breaking the silence, “How was your journey to Somerville?”
How was it? I couldn’t tell, and the only words that could come out of my lips were, “It was okay.”
“Just okay? You saw the friend you went there for?” he probed further.
“I did. By the way, I’ll be going back tomorrow,” I finally announced.
“What?”
“I’m moving to Somerville,” I repeated, this time around, in clarity.
“Why?” he asked.
“I’ll be staying with a friend over there.” I answered, dismissing his question.
But he had no intention of backing down, “I asked why not with who,” he pointed out, and before I could respond, he added, “Is it because of mom?,” his second sentence came out strained compared to the first.
My eyes met his, “No,” the short response didn’t seem convincing enough to him.
“Then why?”
“Just like that. And then, I rejected the Alpha after all, so I doubt it would take up to a week before I’m sent out of the territory. I’m just making plans ahead.” I explained with a shrug, mouthing another spoon of cereal.
“Then why Somerville?”
“Huh?” I rose a brow at him.
“Why Somerville? isn’t that like one of the cities under the Black Fur pack territory?” his eyes subtly widened.
“Yes, it is. So?” I couldn’t get his point yet.
“Isn’t that Alpha Rhysand’s Territory? The man from yesterday?” he asked again, “Why are you going there?” worry filtered 2/4

through his voice.
“Yes, it is. And for your second question, I’m going there cause it’s closer somehow and I should cally be able to seade on there.” Compared to his worries, I was barely fazed. And besides, I’ve made my decision already,
“When did you say you’ll be leaving?” he finally settled down and asked, I wondered what was going on through his head
“Not sure when. I’ll get a place there first before moving, I explained and he gave me a small nod
The atmosphere settled into a comfortable silence between us, and I finally got the appetite to finish my bowl of cered
By the time I was done, Elli was done with his also. I rinsed my bowl, and placed it back to the pile of dean dates before stepping out, a minute later, Elli walked out also, with his jacket thrown over this shoulder.
Our conversatin was dry, and everytime he brought something up, my replies were short, which was not usually the case. I just wanted to get a rest from this day already, and I was certain Elli had come to keep me company,
He was usually busy with work, which made it obvious that he had skipped it just for me, yet, I had no idea what to say–1 was tired, mentally.
A rest should do the trick, but then I also wanted company. Staying alone would make me remember things I didn’t want to.
Elli and I sat in the living room and we brushed simple topics, he seemed displeased with the idea of me going to Somerville, but he tried so hard to not end up dictating my choices, which was why he didn’t talk about it anymore, and I didn’t mention it either.
“Mom asked about you,” he suddenly said and made a little gesture by brushing his hands through his hair and disheveling it, “She was worried.” He added.
I quirked a brow at him, “You mean she was worried about you. I saw her earlier today?
He glanced toward me, hesitation flickering in his eyes before he continued, “She was worried about you too.”
“But she never called.” I stated, and Elli fell into silence, unable to continue any longer.
“You do know she cares about you right?” he muttered in a low voice as if unsure of his words.
“I know.”
“She just makes rash decision at times and well her mental illness isn’t helping matters also sometimes,” he reasoned with
- me.
“Stop making excuses for her, Elli. We’ve gone past this numerous number of times already, I released a tired breath and Elli turned silent once again.
“But she cares,” he trailed, trying to make me understand.
“She might, but as long as she thinks I look like her dead husband,” I paused, rephraisng my word, “Father,” I corrected.
“As long as she thinks my face and every action I make mirrors his, then she’ll never really care about me like a mother should. And honestly, I’m fine with that.”
Elli stared at me for a long time, before finally releasing a sigh, “You aren’t,” he pointed out.
“I’m okay with it, I promise.”

“Then you shouldn’t be okay with something like that,” he frowned, but it immediately softened when he realized nothing could be done.
Whether I was okay with it or not wasn’t enough to make her change.
He rubbed a palm on his forehead before nodding, “It’s late,” he said, getting up from the couch which was beside where I was sitting, “See you tomorrow. I have work to deal with first thing tomorrow morning.”
“Alright, goodnight,” I stood up from the couch and Elli embraced me in a warm hug before heading to the door.
Less than thirty minutes later, I walked into my small bedroom and slumped on the bed, before staring up at the ceiling and
my
mind wandered off.
My apartment was a small self contain with a bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom and a small sitting room, it was a place I’ve been staying for the past couple of years and only moved to my mother’s place cause of the mating ceremony.
The silence in the room was shattered by a sudden ping sound from my phone, I picked it up from the bedside table and tapped the message I had just received.
I furrowed my brows at the text.
When I had accepted Rhysand’s offer to get me a place, I didn’t expect it to be this early.
Rhysand: THE APARTMENT IS READY.
