Evelynne:
I stood in front of the clear mirror in the bathroom, staring blankly at my reflection and pondering over something I really should have forgotten about but I just couldn’t.
The image of Rhysand’s thorn expression kept haunting me and I felt bad, very bad.
Yes, there should be distance of course, no touching, I had instructed from begining. But… he was just being considerate- which he might perhaps do to anyone else out there–right?
Who cares this deep about what’s in the mind of someone they are meant to just use and dispose after two years? no one. I reminded myself before shaking my head and turning the faucet on.
Scooping water in my palms, I leaned over the wash hand basin and splashed water across my face before reaching out for a small towel and drying my face as I walked back into my bedroom.
My eyes zeroed in on the unopened big box lying on top of my bed, along with a smaller one which I presumed was packaged with the heels for the dress, and then there was another very smaller box which came along with them–all the boxes were unopened yet and they arrived close to thirty minutes back.
I just wasn’t ready to see the content yet.
My
attention drifted to the bedside when I heard the sound of my phone ringing.
Pacing over to the bed, I picked it and stared hard at the caller ID when I saw it was Desmond calling.
Don’t answer it, something in my head warned but I tapped the accept icon before I could be convinced otherwise.
“You left the pack,” he said soon as the call was answered.
My hand stilled on the phone for a while, before I finally responded to him, “I did.”
“When?” he asked, voice slipping and I heard the faint sound of glass breaking from the other end.
“A couple of days back.” There was no reason to let him see the animosity I haboured for him, which was one of the reason I accepted his call.
For some reason, he’s been going on and on about how he loved me, and how he still does.
Hearing him spit out lies ever so smoothly hurts and breaks my heart, cause this was the same man I had trusted and would have in another life, but not after seeing the aftermath of the things he did to me that led to my demise.
Not after seeing how very capable he is of destroying my life if I give him the chance to.
How he treated me after our marriage contradicts his actions and words for the past week, but I couldn’t be deceived–he watched me die in the hands of Gabriella after all, and he was the reason behind it all.
My shoulders trembled with an insurmountable wave of rage when I heard his next words, “You left me,” his weary voice said.
“I did.” My fingers subconsciously tapped the side table close to the bed, and my hands went to my hair, brushing it back with my fingers, almost pulling it with the wave of annoyance that fueled me.

His voice irritated me.
His persistence annoyed me.
His lies infuriated me.
I was completely done with this man.
Call me stupid, but a tiny bitsy part of me still clung to him despite everything. Despite knowing what he would turn me to if I stupidly give him another chance.
Despite knowing for a fact that I had very little chance to not die miserably once again.
One flop this time around, and that would be all.
I wasn’t scared of death, I was scared of dying miserably with my hands tied helplessly to my back–and that was two entirely different things.
“Why–why–why,” he sang in a fit of rage, “I loved you, I still do,” he bit out, “And I know you love me back. Come back to me, Evie,” his voice trailed low and I soon realized he was drunk over the call.
My fingers moved to my lips, and I didn’t realize when I started biting my nails out of irritation, I wanted to end the call, but no, not like this, so I kept on humoring him.
“Sleeping with my best friend are one of the signs to show how much you love me?” I asked, pressing my lips into a thin line, but releasing them soon again when I felt a sharp ache shoot through my senses from my lips.
He hesitated, “The first time we did it-” He turned silent, but then continued, “She forced me.”
So Gabriella had instigated it all from the beginning? that was a new info.
“And the second time?” I bit out, reigning my anger in and allowing patience to take hold of me for a while.
“We made a deal,” he said after a while.
“You two? what deal?” I asked, suddenly turning curious, forgetting the fact that he might be lying to me about all this.
He released a long deep pained breath, “I can’t tell.”
“You can’t or you won’t?” I bit out, releasing my fingers from my lips as my brows arched in suspicion.
There was something he wasn’t telling me, I realized.
Or perhaps he couldn’t?
The second sounded ridiculous.
“I can’t,” he sighed, and I heard the faint sound of tap tap tap on a table from the other end.
“Why?” I found myself asking, with my finger now lingering on the end button.
If I wouldn’t get anything from the call, I might as well end it.
“I…” he trailed and for the first time, I heard sheer fear in his voice.
He was–is–an Alpha, he feared no one, he shouldn’t.

Chapter 31
Getting increasingly tired of the conversation already, my eyes closed shut tightly, about to hang the call when Desmond suddenly said, “Come back to Lakeville and I’ll tell you. Come back to me, Evie,” he said drunkenly.
“Nice try, Desmond.” I bit out before finally tapping the end button, not in the mood to continue with the conversation
anymore.
Sitting on my bed, my head pondered over all he said and my lips tightened into a thin line.

He had the chance to tell me what was behind it all, but decided not to at the last minute, and to be honest I doubt I cared about what he wanted to say.
At the end of the day, he destroyed me, watched my best friend slit my throat, and I died in ruins at his house, a place which was meant to be a safe haven for me.
No matter what he says, I’ll get my revenge to pay back for the hurt he caused me when all I had wanted to do was to love him and have him love me back.
A sharp ache shot through my chest and my heart constricted in my ribcage, pounding at a sharp and intense rhythm.
I sniffed, and my body turned rigid when I felt tears pool in my eyes, threatening to spill out. My hands reached my eyes to feel it, and it was indeed tears.
I wiped my eyes before it could spill down, but even at that, a tear rolled down my eyes, and then another, and another, and
I found myself desperately trying to stop them from falling because I wasn’t supposed to be weak.
I wasn’t weak, I may have been, but I’m not.
The room turned silent with nothing but the sound of my sobs shattering the serenity.
I wanted them to stop, they wouldn’t.
So I let them fall off my eyes. The sobs cracking through me eventually lessened and the pain around my chest reduced.
A breathy sigh escaped my lips and my eyes drifted off to the ceiling.
Couple of minutes later, the phone on my hand vibrated and my body stilled, hoping it wasn’t from Desmond as my eyes glanced down at it.
It was a text, I realized.
Swiping it up and scrolling down to my messages, my eyes squinted down in curiosity as I saw the message was from Rhysand.
Rhysand: HI.
That’s weird, I noted but then felt like maybe he was trying to have things back to the usual between us after that awkward silence before he left.
Standing up from the bed, I went back into the bathroom, splashing water across my face to rinse out the tears before heading back inside and finally picking my phone to respond after five minutes since he texted.
Evelynne: Hi.
Barely a second later, he entered the message and I was left wondering how this man could text me and reply immediately, not having my messages on delivered for far too long between his very busy schedule.

Rhysand: SOMETHING URGENT CAME UP.
My brows furrowed into a frown.
Evelynne: Okay. So?

I waited for close to fourty good long seconds, curious about what exactly was urgent that he needed to tell me about it.
Seconds turned to minutes, and I waited patiently, burning with curiosity.
He finally viewed my message, and the typing icon popped up, so I waited for a message, but the icon went out again.
Only for my phone to suddenly start ringing in my hands, surprise shot through me cause for a moment I thought it was Desmond calling once again, but staring harder and longer, I saw that it was Rhysand.
Swiping accept, and bringing the phone to my ear, I waited patiently for him to talk.
“Hi-” I was about to say but then my lips clamped shut when his deep hoarse voice sounded from the other end.
“I apologize…” he trailed and bit out deeply, sucking in a deep breath and I felt this might be hard on him–his next words, I mean- “If this is coming up uncomfortable with your day schedule but I need you,” he drawled, “Here in Boston.”
“Huh?” Unable to understand what he meant by he needed me there, I waited for him to explain further.
“I can’t explain on the call.”
“So you expect me to suddenly pick my bags and start heading over there without an explanation?” I asked, brows tightening.
“I’ll explain to you when you arrive. But it relates with you being my partner to a meeting,” he said in a low voice.
“Somerville to Boston is like how many hours anyway? you expect me to just haul a bolt and head over there?” I asked confusedly.
“I never said you’ll transport by land, did I?” He asked in a much deeper tone.
“Oh.”
“But this is a very impromptu arrangement, where do you expect me to get the money for the fare?” I waited patiently for an answer, while checking my account balance to see if I could reach there with the money I had left.
It would be enough, but I might end up with very little money on me.
His husky voice cursed from the other end and I felt my fingers tremble the slightest at the timbre of his voice, “I never asked you to use your money.”
“Well then, how do I get there?”
“The fare shouldn’t be your problem. I just need you here. My assistant prepared everything already, a chauffeur will come pick you up in the next twenty to thirty minutes,” he explained and I just ‘ohhed‘ with a nod, forgetting that he couldn’t see
- me.
My legs shot up from the bed, “Is there anything I need to bring?”
“No. Just you.” I nodded again, walking over to my box.

I wasn’t fully uncertain of what this was about but the urgent tone to his voice made me spring to action.
In our span of two years, he’s going to need me and vice versa, it was a contract that two sides are supposed to abide to after
all.
From the other end of the call, I heard him speaking with someone, before he said to me, “Your flight is to take off in an hour”
Holding the phone and pressing it between my shoulder and ear, I muttered, “I’ll be there.”
But couldn’t help but add, “I really hope this is urgent enough to have you making me spring out of the house this way.” Picking up a shirt and pants, I dropped it over to the bed before slipping out of my joggers and crop top.
I stalled over to the bathroom, stark naked and turned the shower on.
For some reason, his breath turned sharp and deeper, “It is.” I heard him say from the other end ever so smoothly but his voice was lower than before, like he fought the words out.
“See you in how many hours?” I asked unsure of how long it would take me to get there.
But the response I got were beep sounds, signify the end of the call.
Turrowed my brows down my phone, wondering why he did that.
