Chapter 38
Evelynne:
Rhysand’s hand slipped from my shoulders and I heard him say from behind me, “We’ve been here for a while now
His hands which had left my shoulders, returned soon, but this time, he gently placed them on the small of my back, and I watched the woman’s expression brighten at the subtle action, her eyes continuosly moved between Rhysand and 1. It was clear as day that she had a lot to say.
She was all gleeful and bright, while the man with her which I presumed to be her husband, looked less than thrilled, rather his brows furrowed in suspicion, like he could clearly see deep to our hearts and know that this is all nothing but a charade.
“My wife decided to stop by a stall on our way here,” the man said, frowning subtly, “Cause she didn’t think coming empty handed to see your woman would be normal.”
“Oh, stop making a big deal out of it,” She smiled, reaching out for the small bag held by her husband, “Of course it wouldn’t be nice to come empty handed,” She walked over to wear we stood.
For a while, I stood there, unsure of how to act or what to say, but my thoughts were brought back to the moment when I felt Rhysand’s hand move from the small of my back as he came to stand behind me directly, with both hands settling on either sides of my waist..
He gently moved his thumbs and I felt my skin tingle at the gentle action to not make me not zone out, “This is Evelynne, he introduced me to the couple before us. “Evie, meet the Blackwoods. They are close friends with my grandfather”
Soon as he finished the introduction, my lips pulled into a subtle smile, majorly because of how warmly and softly the older woman was smiling at me, and it was so infectious that I couldn’t help but smile back.
The tension I had felt from earlier when they had just stepped in, eventually lessened when she took my hands and placed a small brown bag on it.
“While we were on our way here, My husband and I stopped by a jewellery store to get something, and I couldn’t help but pick something else for Rhysand’s partner in mind.” She took my hand in hers.
“Thank you,” I said my first words to them and couldn’t help but smile in appreciation.
“Oh, boy. She’s a beauty with a nice voice.” Mrs. Blackwood complimented, eyes sparkling with so much warmth. “How long have you two been together? Rhysand have never mentioned about you till yesterday.”
Rhysand’s hands on both sides of my waste didn’t falter, rather he pulled me closer.
I forced a bright smile, trying to appear nonchalant despite the flutter in my chest. Rhysand’s touch was warm, possessive, and utterly assuring. For a moment, I forgot we were just pretending.
The woman’s voice broke the spell, her words dripping with saccharine sweetness. “Oh, you two are just adorable! How long have you been together?” She asked again, waiting for an answer, her eyes crinkled at the edges the brighter she smiled.
She looked to be in her early to late sixties, but old age didn’t waver her beauty or confidence in any way.
“Four months now,” I said, recalling what Rhysand had told me earlier.
Mrs Blackwood looked away from me to Rhysand, and her eyes subtly widened, “Four whole months? and you never mentioned it?” she shook her head subtly in disappointment, “Not even your grandfather knows about it.”

Chapter 38
“How certain are we that he is serious with her? Four months haven’t been that long. Her hushand soret from hered he walked over to the couch, and sat down on it, reaching out for the bottled water on the cable
Mrs. Blackwood glanced back to her husband at his comment.
My eyes fell on his dark green tie that was neatly knotted, the colour of his fie marched his wife’s date prom tree shots complemented her hair perfectly.
The dress was elegant, with subtle embroidery around the neckline, and fell just below her knees & par of red rating adorned her ears, matching the warmth in her eyes.
She turned back to us, her gaze still sparkling with curiosity.
1 forced another bright smile, trying to keep up the charade. Rhysand’s hands on my waist were a constant reminder of the
le I was playing.
but as I looked into Mrs. Blackwood’s warm eyes, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt.
We were deceiving these kind people, pretending to be something we’re not. But I pushed the thought side almon immediately.
“Says the person that proposed to me after just three months of meeting one another, She rolled her eyes and her line twitched.
He frowned, “Well, it’s understandable then.”
“Better.” She smiled again, “Now, let’s have a seat. There’s a lot to say. I want to know everything how you two met and all that.” My heart skipped a beat at her words cause I was unsure of how I’ll be able to answer whatever questions thrown a me without stuttering cause the words will all be nothing but lies fabricated to hold our charade.
Rhysand led me to the couch directly opposite the one the Blackwood’s were sitting on, and between us was a table
He sat down beside me, and poured water in a glass cup before handing it out to me as if he could sense my unease
A couple of minutes after we settled down, the door was opened and the meals were brought in
Mrs. Blackwood broke the silence, “Now who’s going to finally tell me how you two met,” she asked again
I opened my lips, about to say something, but thought better of it and chose to allow Rhysand answer the question instead
He cleared his throat, “We met at a charity event.”
“And you two clicked immediately?” her eyes brightened once again and I took it that the woman before as must be a lover of romance, cause that was the only explanation for how interested she was.
“No, of course not.” Rhysand responded. There was a short pause and I took it that he was unsure of what to say, so I spoke
out.
“We didn’t exactly click at first. I was lost around the place and was asking him for directions. And after that day, we coincidentally met somewhere else, so that’s where it all started from.”
I had no idea how I came up with my words, but I took it that Rhysand approved of it when I felt his hand gently settle on my thigh.
“And for the past four months, he never bothered to take you to his grandfather?” Mr. Blackwood shook his head subtly. “Meeting family isn’t something a man serious with you would ignore, there was a subtle silence in the room when Mr.

Blackwood decided to talk.

My gaze met his, and the sharp intensity in his eyes urged me to look away, but I only gave him a subtle smile, which seemed to befuddle him, “I wasn’t staying in Somerville until recently, Rhysand was also busy with work, so there wasn’t an rush to meet his family at first, and I believed he’ll eventually take me to his grandfather when the time was right.
The response was all I could come up with, and it seemed like Mr. Blackwood approved it as he nodded don understanding
“Understandable.” He muttered under his breath.
The conversation went on, and after a couple of minutes we finally started eating. For a while, we talked about simple topic and I quickly noticed how Mrs. Blackwood always had something to say, or questions to ask, it appeared she had endless of them in stored.
crything was going well for close to an hour, until her husband decided to suddenly ask a question I wasn’t unable to thin
A quick answer to.
“I believe Rhysand have told you about his parents before?” The moment the question was asked, the air around the room seemed to have a suddenly shift and I noticed Rhysand’s hand on my thigh suddenly stopped moving as he stiffened beside
- me.
I immediately realized Rhysand’s parents seemed to be something of an off topic to him and the people around him, and I couldn’t help but wonder why.
Fighting to keep a normal smile on my face, I pondered on the best answer to give to his question, cause it appeared that if 1 said I don’t know about his parents and that he have never mentioned it to me, then it means he wasn’t serious about me.
Mrs. Blackwood’s eyes remained rooted on me, and so as her husband’s as they waited for my response.
“You don’t know about them?” the older man’s brows furrowed as he asked after I didn’t immediately give an answer.
