Chapter 4
“Evelynne, it’s almost time.”
Mom’s voice interrupted my train of thoughts as I stood in front of the mirror, lost in staring at nothingness,
I couldn’t stop the burning ache in my chest, filled with both fear and uncertainty about what I intended to do,
Stepping away from the mirror, I clutched the deep shade of red purse in my hand tightly, mirroring the tightness in my throat and chest, before heading towards the door.
With a last glance at the dress sprawled on the floor, its delicate lace and satin fabric glistening in the light, I walked out of the room and headed to the living room, with every step I took, the soft rustle of my dress echoed through the hallway.
As I approached the living room, the sound of hushed voices drifted into the hallway, breaking the silence. I walked closer to the living room and that’s when I heard my mother’s firm tone and Elli’s frustrated whisper.
“Mom, we really need to do something.” Elli muttered in a low voice that sounded helpless.
“We wouldn’t do anything about it, the mating ceremony would go on as planned, she’ll get marked and mated, and become a wife to the Alpha. She’ll become our Luna and you dare not try anything fishy.” Mom’s tone left no room for anymore.
Elli released an exasperated sigh, “Why’s everyone remaining blind to the fact that this isn’t right? I can’t watch my sister get married to that man!”
“That man is your Alpha and also your sister’s mate, it was ordained by the goddess!”
She released a deep breath, rubbing her right palm on her forehead continuosly, “if you have a problem with it then go straight to Evelynne and tell her about your worries. Stop bothering me cause I can’t do anything about it.” Mom’s voice rose a pitch and I could already imagine how furious she was.
“Mom…” Elli trailed, “You know I can’t do that, last time I tried to talk it out with her about it, she shut me out and you know, how that turned out.” He sounded vulnerable and my chest constricted the further he went.
When Desmond and I just got together years back, my brother was the only one that didn’t agree with it, and he never failed to lay how dissatisfied he was.
Ellison never liked Desmond from the beginning, and he never hid it.
Every single time he complained, I shoved his opinions away, and never let him convey them and for a long time I failed to realize how fragile my relationship with my brother was becoming cause we couldn’t come in terms with each other.
He was blinded by his hate for Desmond and did everything he could to separate us, and I was blinded by the love I had for Desmond which resulted in a conflict with my brother.
I was frustrated that Elli just couldn’t see how happy I was back then–we went five months without speaking to one another.
Five bleeding months without Elli felt like hell but I wasn’t ready to come in terms with him if he would continuosly remain dissatisfied with my boyfriend.
Elli ended up apologizing, and after that, he never said anything about Desmond and I, but that came to a stop when Desmond found out I’m his mate.
As Elli’s words trailed off, memories came flooding back.

My eyes prickled with unshed tears, my vision blurred as I struggled to keep my emotions.
Elli is here. Breathing and nagging.
I pursed my lips tightly to keep the whimpers away. In my past life, a year after my mating ceremony, my brother left… for good.
“Evelynne?” Elli’s voice called out, his tone laced with a mix of surprise and fear.
I wiped away the tears in my eyes before stepping out.
“Why are you crying?” he stepped closer, staring at me with concerned emerald eyes, his brown hair was neatly swept to the back.
The two of us were the perfect example of facially identical twins; brown hairs, emerald eyes but we bore huge differences, mostly in characters.
“Crying? no I’m not, I think I’ve got something in my eyes,” the words slipped out of my lips, “Can you help me get it out please?”
“Sure,” he stepped very close to me and checked my eyes, his brows squinted before he blowed air into my eyes, “Okay now?” he asked and I nodded.
As he took steps back, his brows remained squinted as if he did see something in my eyes, but there was nothing there.
“We don’t have time, we are late already,” Mom grabbed her purse from the couch, before returning her gaze to me, the wrinkles on her forehead were becoming obvious wnd clear day by day, “Oh my God! why are you dressed like this?” her eyes widened in terror as she stared down at my dress.
“You look pretty.” Elli muttered.
“Pretty?!” Mom yelled, sparing him a glance before turning a sharp gaze towards me, “why are you on a maroon dress?! what about the Crystal blue Gabriella brought earlier?” her brows remained tight as she stared hysterically between the dress and my eyes.
“I don’t like the style of the dress.” My response was simple and the crease on her brows deepened further.
“You don’t have to like the style of the dress, you are just meant to wear it. The Crystal blue is meant to represent the Pack, so why this?” her expression went down the hill as she asked, but didn’t wait for a response before she ordered:
“Go and change back into that dress, baby, we need to go, it’s almost time.”
I made a decision to not wear that dress, and no one will change that. Just before I could say anything, Elli’s voice interrupted.
“I’m certain no one will have a problem seeing her in this dress. It was never mandated that she wears that one and besides…” he glanced down at his watch, “We are late already, so let’s go.”
Mom released a frustrated breath, and shook her head in disappointment before stepping out of the living room.
I smiled in appreciation towards Elli before turning and heading towards the door, but his words halted me midway.
“Why were you crying Evie?” he asked.
“Crying? when was that?”

“You know what I’m talking about, stop trying to feign ignorance.” He stated in frustration.

For a minute, we both stood in silence before he continued, “Just so you know, if at any point in time you decide you don’t want this anymore, just tell me and I’ll come for you.” He assured me in the softest tone.
“I know,” my lips pulled into a smile, but I dared not turn back to look him in his eyes, cause I was certain that if I did, I wouldn’t have the heart to continue with this anymore.
“But what if I’m already marked? will you still come for me?” I asked.
His response was immediate like he had everything planned out already, “Hell yeah, no matter the situation or point in time, as long as you don’t want him anymore, tell me, and I’ll come get you.” He assured.
“Thank you,” were the only words I could come up with before I stepped out the door.
One more second with him in there, and I was certain I’ll turn into a shattering mess in front of him.
