Chapter 40
Evelynne:
After close to three hours of conversing with the Blackwoods, we finally left the restaurant and were presently sitted in Rhysand’s car as we made our way back to the hotel.
Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, my mind whirled with unpleasant thoughts and I desperately tried to push the back. A while later, my eyes fluttered opened and I stared outside the window, completely ignoring the presence of the ma beside me.
I could feel his gaze on me and a huge part of me knew he had questions to ask, and that his suspicions about me and my intentions might be increasing, but still, I wasn’t ready to divulge anything to him, and he shouldn’t have any business with my life either.
“I booked a flight and it’s leaving in the next two hours. I presumed since we’ve gotten signature on the contract file already then there should be no other reason to stay back in Boston.” The silence in the car was broken by Rhysand’s assistant’s voi who was sitting at the passenger seat of the car, and, beside him was the chauffeur driving us back to the hotel.
Rhysand looked up from the files he was reading, “What time did you say it’s departing?” he inquired, finally speaking after long time of silence.
“Next two hours,” His assistant stared at him through the rearview mirror, and for a moment it was as if they were exchanging words, before Rhysand finally turned to look at me.
I glanced at him and that’s when he asked, “Will you be okay with spending one more night at the hotel?” he rose a brow in question.
Pondering over it, I simply nodded.
“Book a flight for tomorrow instead,” Rhysand glanced back at his assistant and told him, of which the latter nodded.
Immediately I stepped into the room, 1 felt Rhysand’s brooding presence follow in after me.
As we entered, the tension between us was palpable. I could feel Rhysand’s eyes on me, boring into my skin. I tried to ignore him, focusing on getting my bearings in the room.
But Rhysand didn’t give me space–his eyes followed me as he clicked the door shut and the silence in the room turned frustrating.
If he had something to say, he should speak up, rather than keep quiet about it for this long.
I walked over to the bed and sat on it, reaching down to the buckles of my heels to remove them as I could feel a sharp ache on my ankle.
“Evelynne,” he said finally, his voice low and even. “We need to talk.”
I turned to face him, unsure of what he wanted to say but curious about it as my heart raced in my ribcage. “What is it?”
Rhysand’s eyes narrowed at me, and he stood by the door, leaning on it as if hesitating to completely step into the room. “Don’t play dumb. You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
My brows pulled into a tight frown, growing confused, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He rose a brow at me questioningly, “You don’t?”
“How do you expect me to know if you don’t state it?” I shrugged simply, finally understanding where his words were heading to but trying hard to appear nonchalant despite the sudden brewing emotions whirling inside me.
“When I accepted this contract, perhaps I skipped to inform you about the part where there shouldn’t be much secrets between us.”
I frowned, turning my head to glance at him, “I don’t understand. What are you insinuating?”

His deep rooted gaze remained on me, not wavering even for one bit, “I’m insinuating that you’re hiding something from me. He pushed himself off the wall and stepped into the large expanse of the hotel room.
Dark intense eyes stared deeply at my eyes, “Something big which I believe I should know about.” His eyes flicked with the slightest amount of anger and curiosity, “Something I believe that I should at least have a right to know about, as far as this contract between us is concerned.”
The further he went, the further my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach, I felt a sudden rise of fear and uncertainty, but I tried to keep my cool. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I repeated, turning my eyes away from his before the look on them swallows me whole.
Turning my focus back to the buckle in my heels, I ignored his presence for a while, but that didn’t take long before he opened up again.
His gaze never wavered. “Don’t fucking lie to me when it’s clear as day that you are hiding something important,” he said, anger and impatience dripping down the tone of his voice.
A frown marred my expression and my fingers that were working on the buckle in the heels paused for a moment before I looked up, “What do you mean by that? What exactly are you trying to know here?” I stared confusedly at hìm.
Rhysand response was immediate, “Perhaps you could start by telling me why on earth you are still texting with your ex- mate which you rejected already,” his nose flared in outrage and I gulped down the lump forming in my throat, “and maybe you should end it with explaining the main reason why you walked up to me the first day to help you bring down this sams person.”
I stared up at him, my brows tightening in confusion, “What is going on with you? why the sudden questions?”
“Answer my questions, Evelynne.” Rhysand said in a low and even voice as he watched me, waiting for answers to his question. His steps came to a halt when he reached where I was sitted on the bed.
I couldn’t bear the intense way he was staring at me, nor could I bear the anger shimmering from his eyes but showing a sign of defiance would make him assume he was going to get answers out of me.
And I had no intention of telling him anything, especially not about my reason behind all this.
Shaking my head, I turned my eyes away from his, “The answers to your questions are personal, and my personal life shouldn’t be your business.”
Finally removing the buckles of my heels, I removed the two of them, and stood up from the bed, ignoring Rhysand’s gaze that remained on me as I side–stepped him, making my way to the walk–in closet.
But before I could take more than three steps, I heard him curse in a low voice before his hand reached out to me, grasping my arm and holding me back. I felt a surge of annoyance, and I tried to shake him off.
“You aren’t supposed to touch me.” I gaped at him.

“I shouldn’t, but I can’t have you walking out on me when you haven’t answered my questions,” he said almost immediately, with his intense dark eyes still unyielding.
“Let me go, Rhysand,” I said, trying to keep my voice even.
Rhyand’s grip tightened. “Not until you answer my questions,” his eyes narrowed
“Why do you even want to know?” I couldn’t help but ask.
“Cause I want to fucking help you! And I can’t do that if you keep on hiding the fucking important details.” I watched him for a second, letting his words sink in, and a part of me nearly gave in, because I knew I needed all the help the man before me will be willing to offer.
Sut then I shook my head, chasing out the voice to give in.
I tried to wriggle free, but he held firm. “Rhysand, this is ridiculous,” I said, trying to reason with him. “I don’t see why my personal life is any of your business.”
His expression turned cold. “You made it my business when you walked up to me that day and asked for my help,” he said, his voice dripping with ice.
I felt a shiver run down my spine at his words, and I knew I had to think fast. I couldn’t let him know the truth, not yet. Not
ever.
“If you intend to invade in my personal business then you should be just as prepared to tell me about yours too.” I said, finally looking up at him in defiance.
I glanced down at his hand that was gripping my arms, before I looked up again, “Tell me about your parents. Every single thing. And then I’ll tell you my reason behind why I walked up to you that day.”
The moment my words sank in, he frowned, eyes glinting with slight amusement but it was just for a milli second and then it was gone.
His grip on my arm tightened and then my arms slipped out of his hand as he finally let go.
He was about to say something, but then decided not to as he turned around, muttering, “Suit yourself.”
Rhysand walked away, and the last thing I heard was the loud slamming of the door as he stepped out.
