Chapter 6
Rhysand:
TWO DAYS PRIOR.
My heart thumped loudly in my chest as I stared at the invitation card on my desk.
Invitation card for a fucking mating ceremony that I’ll be damned if I attend.
My legs felt heavy as I walked to the window and yanked open the curtains and then the tie around my collar, the more it remained there, the harder it became for me to breathe.
A harsh knock on the door interrupted my peace, and before I could respond to it, the door burst open.
“You don’t know how to knock like a normal person?!” My voice came out harsh and my eyes drifted to the door. I stared daggers at Xavier who sauntered into the office and threw himself on the couch.
“My bad.” He muttered with a wave.
With his sleeves neatly folded to his elbows, the outline of his tattoos were out in display. Xavier stood up from the couch, before walking over to where I was.
His pale green eyes gleamed with mischief as it rested on me. One look was enough for me to know what he was here for. “Did you receive the invitation card also?” He reached out for a crystal blue colored card from his back pocket and nearly flipped it close to my face.
“I did.” I turned my gaze away from him, my jaw clenched, “Xavier, get out.” My voice was low and threatening, he knew better than to push me.
His question was heading somewhere which I’ve desperately tried to block off from my mind for the past days and I already knew he was going to pester me about it.
He chuckled, “Oh, come on. You know you’re curious.”
“So what are you gonna do about it?” He asked in a low voice, and leaned in on the windowsill, staring outside.
“Nothing.” I responded.
“If I were you I would crash the party.”
“And that’s why we are different.”
He clicked his tongue, and reached for a lighter from his pocket.
“Maybe,” a smile spread across his face before he continued, “Whatever.” He waved.
“If you change your mind, count me in. I’ll love a good thrill, especially during this sad times of mine.” He flipped the lighter once again, staring outside the window.
Sad in the essence that his father has been troubling him with a lot of work recently, which deprived him of his usual late night fun.
“I’ve already said I’m not doing a thing.” I turned back to the large table in the office, before reaching out for a file and

Maybe if he sees I’m busy, he’ll leave, But unfortunately, Xavier was a different breed that didn’t think like a normal human.
“I don’t know, I just have a feeling you might change your mind.” He shrugged before walking over to the chair opposite me.
“A wrong feeling then.” I stated and he shook his head.
“Nahh, I’m never wrong.” He asserted before brushing his hands through his disheveled blonde hair.
“Then this will be a first.”
PRESENTLY
I gruntled back a curse that threatened to slip out my lips. Xavier was right. Fucking stupid Xavier and his words.
–
Standing in front of a whole crowd gathered for my friend’s or rather, acquaintance’s- mating ceremony; it was meant to be a night that passed by smoothly without any hitch, I had everything scheduled before I arrived here.
The number of conversations I’ll have with anyone before retiring in the dark corners of the hall.
The number of vodka I’ll churn down my throat while watching the flower meant to be mine slip off my fingers.
And never in a thousand years would I have imagined it turning this way.
Evelynne pulled me terribly closer, her lips pressed to mine and the hairs in my skin stood at the contact, she invaded my mouth with her tongue, sucking the air out of my lungs in the presence of gasps, yells and hundreds of people present for the ceremony.
This wasn’t meant to happen.
But here I was, pulling her in rather than pushing her away.
The warmth of her body felt closer than I would have ever imagined- I had sworn not to let this happen, sworn to not lock her way, yet here I stood, pulling her in closer than needed. The hypocrisy bites my nerves.
It’s been seven days since I figured she was my mate, one week since Desmond found out she was his mate and I watched in agony at how happy she was.
The gleam in her eyes made me realize that she wasn’t feeling the urge buried in my chest. The moon goddess was playing a game by making my mate be a mate to someone else. Not just anyone, but my friend–or rather, acquaintance.
There was no way in hell I would have accepted a rejection from her, so rather than express the wild fire burning in my chest, I kept it hidden.
How did the pain feel like? excruciating.
But I was ready to risk it all, if Desmond would give her the happiness she deserved, then so be it–because I knew with certainty that the happiness she deserved wouldn’t be in my tips. I would never be able to give it to her.
Not now, not ever.
With a painful grunt, I pulled away from the kiss and stared deeply at the lady before me, her emerald green eyes stared at me pleadingly.
“What was that for?” my eyes narrowed at her.

Her eyes pleaded with me. “Please. Help me out of here. Her voice was barely audithe
My eyes searched her emerald eyes for any clue as to what was going on, but there was nothing–un lesgereen
I glanced away from her, towards Desmond who was on the verge of flipping the hall down.
My eyes searched the hall and fell on the ‘I told you so‘ smirk on Xavier’s face as he stood in the far corner
Idiot.
The tiny hands that grabbed my wrist brought my attention back to the lady in front of me, she looked away from my face to Desmond who was heading towards us.
I jerked my hands away from hers and her eyes widened as she stared back at me. The way she looked a medidas down to my heart; her flowery scent invaded my thoughts.
I knew at that momemt that I shouldn’t have ever come here in the first place.
My body was reacting to her closeness, so I took a step back from her, and watched as the pursed her lips, and more “Please.”
The moment those words slipped out of her lips I knew I was fucked.
Desmond stepped beside her and yanked her hands, “Stop this Evelynne!” He yelled and she turned to face him, her face paled and dread marred her expression.
“Turn around with me right now and I promise to forgive you for your little charade so we can continue this ceremony She tried to pull her hand away from his, but his grip seemed tight enough that she couldn’t yank her hand away.
I clenched my fists beside me before stepping further and yanking her hand away from his grip.
Evelynne’s gaze fell on me and I didn’t need to glance at her to know gratitude was spread across her expression–for whatever fucking reason she wanted me to help her out of here, and I might just risk it.
Desmond’s shoulders trembled in anger, “What are you doing, Rhysand?”
“I should be asking you that.”
Desmond’s growl echoed through the hall, “She’s my mate!”
“She rejected you already! so you have no reason to force her to go on with this,” I faced him, my tone firm.
Desmond stepped closer, staring straight to my eyes, “What right do you think you have telling me what to do in my own pack?”
“The right of someone who won’t stand by and watch you force an unwilling mate,” I replied.
I was already shoved into this, and I could only find a way out–with Evelynne who’s desperate to be out of here.
The pack members began to argue, their voice escalated into chaos.
He stared away from us, to the black haired lady standing behind him and on cue she stepped forward.
“Evie, what are you doing?”

Yet what wed me more was the presence of Evelynne beside me, leaning very close and seeking protection–for what I dearly weusit www.of you,

1 sweded a way out of here.
There was no way I could stand and watch anymore, cause the more I stayed, the deeper my anguish.
My eyes drifted to where my best friend stood before, but he was no longer there.
With no other option, I held Evelynne’s hand with a tight grip and it took me time to realize, not until she winced
“We need to get out of here?
Desmond was having none of that as he suddenly gripped Evelynne’s wrist once again, “You are not going anywhere, Evelynne, He snarled, his eyes blazing with anger.
My eyes drifted to where he held her and it took every ounce of control in me to not snap his hand into two.
She tried to yank her arm free, but Desmond held tight, “Let her go!” I growled, he was practically trying to force her into something she didn’t want
His gaze i ked to me, his expression twisted, “Mind your own business, Rhys.”
The tension in the hall was palpable at the moment. Suddenly, Evelynne’s hand shot out, and she slapped Desmond across the face. The sound echoed through the hall and gasps erupted.
Desmond’s eyes flashed with rage, and he raised his hand, as if to strike her back. I reacted on instinct, grabbing his wrist and holding it in a tight grip.
‘Don’t even think about it.” I growled, my eyes locked on his.
The hall erupted into chaos, with pack members shouting and arguing, some trying to intervene while others egged Desmond on.
1 could only imagine what I was getting myself into by doing this in another man’s pack and land.
A woman stepped in out of nowhere, tears glistened down her eyes as she clasped Evelynne’s hand in hers, “What’s this about, Evie? what are you trying to do?”
Evelynne’s body turned rigid beside me and she hesitated for a while before finally stating, “Desmond- I don’t want him,
mom
Her voice trembled. “Desmond’s been sleeping with Gabriella.” She confessed and the hall turned drop dead silent at that
moment.
Desmond eyes widened and the lady beside him paled.
