I… I never thought that would be his reason.
“Megan, you know how expensive houses are around here. The price per
square foot is insane. There’s no way we could ever afford one on our own…”
I took a deep breath and stared into his eyes. “So what?”
“Megan, we’re adults. We’ve all had to deal with hardship. I come from
nothing. It wasn’t easy to get where I am today. My family home would sell
for, at most, $300,000. And even though you’ve always said we don’t need a
house to get married, I just want my partner to contribute financially. I know
your parents work hard on the farm, and buying a house means renovations
too… I can’t even bear to think about it. It just feels hopeless.”
He rubbed his forehead, clearly stressed.
I laughed bitterly. “So, Ethan, you’re just planning to find a rich wife and solve your problems in one go?”
He looked insulted. “Megan, don’t make it sound so awful. My family just
wants what’s best for me. And it’s not like I agreed to go through with it.”
I threw my phone at him, showing him a screenshot. “You already bought her roses. Guess your charm worked.”
I turned and locked myself in the bedroom.
Ethan kept banging on the door, “Megan, open the door. Don’t do anything stupid. I’m telling you, without me, you could definitely find someone better.
We’re just making each other miserable…”

A few moments later, I opened the door and shoved a silver suitcase into
his hands. “This is the stuff I paid for in this rented apartment. Now get out.”
I pushed him out.
Just as I was about to shut the door, he wedged his hands between it. “At least let me gather my things?”
I had planned for a clean breakup, but he clearly had no shame.
“Ethan, other than what’s in this suitcase, everything else was paid for by
- me. You want to settle up? Fine by me.”
He let go as soon as I said that. “Is there really a need to be this precise?”
I slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
“You’re holding a suitcase full of things I bought for you. I thought the color suited you.”

After working a late–night shift and fighting off a cold, I was too exhausted to even process the breakup. All I wanted was to sleep.
Just as I fell asleep, the phone rang. I groggily picked it up.
“Megan Summers, don’t blame Ethan. There’s an old saying, ‘People
always strive for something better.’ You’re just not his best option anymore.”
Slowly, I became more alert. It was Ethan’s mom.

“Hah. If I’m not mistaken, didn’t you say last year that we were perfect for
each other?”
She cleared her throat. “That was last year.”
“Right, last year when I didn’t ask for a house, I was the best match. Now that someone can help him buy a home, they’re the better option, huh?”
At least she had one redeeming quality–she never pretended with me.
“That’s exactly it! You’re pretty, have a good job, but your family background isn’t great. Auntie’s just advising you to find someone who’s a better fit for you, too. Life will be easier that way. Let me know when you’re free, and I’ll come by to pick up Ethan’s things. It’s all men’s stuff, so it’s not convenient to leave it with you.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, though I was speechless at her gall. Clearly, Ethan’s bizarre values were inherited.
“We’ve already broken up. Please don’t call me again. Over the years, I’ve paid for everything. I’m sure your son has saved plenty. He can take whatever he bought. The rest? He won’t have the nerve to ask.”
I hung up the phone. Whatever sadness I felt from ending our seven–year relationship burned away, leaving only anger.
The world of adulthood is nothing like the simple purity of youth. Wrapped in materialism, it’s so ugly you can’t even look at it.
The boy who once held me tight on cold nights had long disappeared, replaced by someone weighed down by calculations and compromises.

I sold everything I’d ever bought for Ethan online, at a bargain price. The rest of the household items, including the bedding, I had cleaned and placed by the trash for anyone who needed them.
As I went through our things, I realized just how much I had bought for him
over those seven years. Clothes, food, everything.
I took photos, posted them, and with every upload, I could feel the
depreciation of my love, making my heart ache.
The only thing I couldn’t sell was the first watch I bought him because it
was broken. He damaged it while saving me.
It was the first winter after he started working. The snow was falling
heavily, and I had bought fruit and was on my way home. The sky wasn’t fully
dark yet, and some cars had their headlights on, some didn’t.
At the corner of an alley, a car suddenly sped out, losing control on the icy
road. Just as it was about to hit me, Ethan ran over and pulled me out of the way. We both fell. I broke my phone and hurt my arm, while he injured his leg
and broke the watch I had given him.

We were broke back then, and he didn’t wear a watch for an entire year. I
even teased him once, drawing a watch on his wrist.
“What brand do you want?” I joked.
He smiled at me with so much affection. “Tag Heuer.”
By the time I could afford to buy him that Tag Heuer, he was no longer
satisfied with just receiving a watch from me.
