The next morning, I hired a cleaning service to deep clean the apartment
and called a locksmith to change the locks. I even sent Rocky to the pet groomer for a fresh new look.
We were both going to start over.
During lunch at the hospital cafeteria, I unexpectedly ran into Ethan’s mom
and Tiffany Jones. They were seated diagonally across from me.
Unlike the way she treated me, Ethan’s mom couldn’t stop smiling and
chatting with Tiffany. At one point, she even tried to wipe a bit of food off Tiffany’s cheek, but Tiffany turned away, and Ethan’s mom awkwardly pulled
her hand back.
When she noticed me smiling and shaking my head, she shot me a glare. I just shrugged and gave her a mocking smile.
Ryan Jacobs came over and handed me some chocolate. “Here, this is from Crystal. You’ve got two surgeries this afternoon.”
I thanked him and excused myself.
As I walked past Ethan’s mom, she gave me the expected eye roll.
The surprise came from Tiffany.
“Dr. Summers, do you have a moment? I’d like to talk.”
Both Ethan’s mom and I turned at the same time. His mom was giving me pleading looks, silently begging me not to agree.

“Sure,” I said, glancing at my watch. “I’ve got an hour.”
The coffee at the hospital entrance was decent, so I only ordered a small slice of sugar–free cake since I had surgery later.
Tiffany didn’t waste any time.
“I know you and Ethan dated.”
I kept eating.
“You’ve broken up now, and we’re together. I like him, and he likes me. It was love at first sight.”

I glanced up at her. She was skinny, with sharp eyes and a fierce expression.
“Are you expecting me to congratulate you?”
She smiled arrogantly. “Not really. I just thought, since we work together, I’d let you know. When he comes to pick me up, it’s best if we just act like
strangers. That’ll be better for everyone!”
I stood up. “Co–workers? I wouldn’t call us that. If I remember correctly, you’re still an intern. Let’s see if you actually stick around before we talk
about being colleagues. As for him? What’s your treasure is my poison. I
don’t want him.”
Tiffany was efficient, though. The very next day, Ethan showed up in the hospital parking lot.
He was holding hands with Tiffany, and in his other hand was an ice cream

cone that he fed to her occasionally.
They were both wearing matching red jackets, and the roses in Tiffany’s hands made the whole scene even more garish.
I remember how Ethan used to refuse to wear bright colors. I guess there’s
nothing people won’t change, as long as someone else wants it badly
enough.
Ryan and Crystal appeared behind me.
“Megan, could you give us a ride? We’re running late for a movie.”
“Of course! Happy to be your chauffeur,” I teased.
Crystal wrapped her arm around me and was about to crack a joke when
she spotted Ethan and Tiffany. Her whole body froze.
She looked at me, confused. “What’s going on?”
I smiled. “Exactly what it looks like. Let’s go.”
My car was parked right next to Ethan’s. I pressed the key fob as I walked over, hoping he’d notice and leave.
But Tiffany clearly had other plans.
“Dr. Summers, I hear you’ve been in the area for a long time. Do you know
where property values are going up? My fiancé and I are looking at houses.”
Crystal, still fuming, jumped in. “Tiffany, if you want to buy a house, ask a real estate agent. Megan doesn’t have time for this.”

I smiled and patted Crystal’s shoulder. “It’s fine. If you’re house–hunting, you might want to check out the neighborhoods near the hospital. Close to work and in the school district. But it’s not cheap.”
Ryan chimed in, “Yeah, I’ve heard the new condos are going for $500 a square foot, and that’s still pre–construction.”
Tiffany, noticing Ethan was still looking at me, pulled him closer, blocking his view. Too bad she wasn’t tall enough to completely block his line of sight.
“Five hundred a square foot? We can still afford it. My dad gave us a
million to buy a house.”
I nodded. “That’s a lot. Should be enough for about 2,000 square feet. Add
in what your husband has, and you can probably get an extra 600.”
“You…” Tiffany’s face turned red as she looked at Ethan. “At least my family is helping with the house. Some people just want to take advantage.
We’re leaving!”
Crystal was about to argue, but I held her back. “Let it go. I threw out the trash a long time ago. Who cares who picks it up? If we don’t leave now, we’ll only catch the end credits.”
In the car, I gave Ryan and Crystal a quick rundown of how Ethan had gone behind my back, looking for a wife to help him buy a house.
Both of them were shocked.
“You loved him for seven years, and it still wasn’t enough to overcome
reality.”

“Well, at least you found out sooner rather than later. I’ve always said he wasn’t good enough for you.”
At the movie theater, we said our goodbyes. But as soon as I rolled up the window, Crystal knocked on it again.
“Megan, I remember your grandma left you a house near the hospital, right?”
I smiled and blinked at her.
