“Doris, don’t let her fool you, Lola warned, tugging at Doris‘ arm to stop her.
Doris‘ face remained icy. “She’s pregnant. I don’t care if it costs grand or not–if something, happens, we can’t afford to be
careless.”
Lola glanced at Claudia’s flat stomach. There was no sign she was pregnant.
“It’s fine. You didn’t know she was pregnant, so it’s not your fault, Doris reassured her, giving her hand a squeeze. “I’ll go with her to the hospital. You take care of the shop”
Soon, the ambulance arrived and took Claudia away. As a family member, Doris went with her.
On the way to the hospital, Doris called Rupert and told him to meet them there.
Lola, worried that Doris might be at a disadvantage alone, decided to inform Lewis.
She didn’t have Lewis‘ contact information, but she had Ivan’s WhatsApp. Through his profile, she found his phone number.
Lola called Ivan, “Mr. Mitchell, can you let Mr. Hartman know that Doris is at the hospital?”
“Of course. What happened to her?” Ivan asked with concern.
“She’s fine. I just don’t want her to be alone in this situation.” Lola quickly explained what had happened at the shop. “Right now, she needs someone on her side. Mr. Hartman is the best person for that.
“Got it. I’ll let him know.” After a pause, Ivan added, “Ms. Bates, thank you.”
“Why thank me? Doris is my best friend, and I can’t stand those scumbags in her family, clinging to her like leeches,” Lola said indignantly.
“If you want to thank me, why not come to my shop for coffee more often and take care of our business.” Lola had her own scheme in mind.
“Sure,” Ivan agreed readily.
“You’re a lawyer, so you can’t go back on your word once you’ve agreed.” Lola was pleased.
After Ivan assured her repeatedly, he ended the call, eager to relay the news to Lewis.
At the emergency department of His Grace Hospital, Doris sat alone outside the emergency room, waiting.
Rupert rushed over after taking leave, sweating profusely. “Doris, how’s Claudia?”
“She’s still inside.” Doris guessed. “She should be fine.”
“I told her to stay home, but she insisted on going out shopping alone.” Rupert wiped the sweat from his face.
Just then, the doctor came out.
Doris and Rupert approached the doctor together, asking about Claudia’s condition. “Doctor, I’m Claudia’s husband, how is she?”
“Even though she’s pregnant, she shouldn’t eat too much, she’s overstuffed,” the doctor frowned, “As her husband, how could you not keep an eye on her? This can’t happen again.”
“Yes.” Rupert nodded in agreement.

Claudia was transferred to a ward, and Rupert and Doris followed.
As soon as Claudia saw Rupert, her eyes welled up with tears. “Husband, you’re finally here. Someone tried to harm me and the baby, you must stand up for us.”

Rupert insisted, “The doctor said you overate, can you stop making a scene?”
“Am I making a scene, or are you afraid of her? She just married some guy who works at Hartman Group. Are you so scared you can’t even stand up for your wife and baby? Rupert, are you even a man?”
Claudia insulted Rupert, “You’re such a coward, I must have been blind to marry you.”
The veins on Rupert’s hand tightened, he was holding back. “Claudia, I understand you’re emotional because you’re pregnant, but enough is enough.”
“Oh, what? Getting impatient now?” Claudia sneered.
Rupert looked at Doris, helpless. “Doris, let’s go.”
Claudia, full of arrogance, got off the bed, trying to stop Doris. “Doris, you harmed me. I won’t let you go just like that.”
Rupert stopped Claudia. “This is a hospital, what are you doing?”
Claudia was becoming more and more unreasonable to him.
Rupert’s patience was slowly wearing thin, he didn’t know how much longer he could hold on. The more he gave in, the worse Claudia became.
He just wanted to love her well, to have a happy family. But it backfired.
“I’m going crazy? It’s all because of you.” Claudia gritted her teeth. “Rupert, move aside.”
“I won’t move.” Rupert’s expression was resolute.
“Then you asked for it.” Claudia slapped Rupert hard across the face. “Get out of the way.”
Rupert didn’t dodge, the slap mark clear on his face.
He clenched his teeth, his facial lines tense.
