Chapter 98
After waking up, Doris realized some things were missing at home, so she made a trip to the supermarket
The supermarket was in the basement, the first floor sold cosmetics, the second floor had dothing, and the third Box
featured furniture.
She found it inconvenient not having a vanity table in her room. With no place to store her skincare and makeup profes she had to use the restroom outside whenever she wanted to put on makeup
Since she was already out, she decided to check the third floor for a suitable vanity table.
As she browsed, she received a call from Lewis. “Where are you?”
“I’m at the supermarket near the apartment, buying some things.”
“Okay.” Doris asked, “Are you coming over?”
“I’m driving. I’ll swing by and help you carry your stuff–it’ll be too heavy for you alone. Lewis said matter–ofay
Doris thought about it and figured that was fine.
Just then, a sales assistant approached her. “Miss, this vanity table is one of our star products. It has a sleek design and comes with an LED mirror–perfect for you. Right now, we have a special promotion.”
Lewis overheard the conversation loud and clear. “Where exactly are you?”
“I’m just browsing on the third floor. I’ll head down to the supermarket now.” Doris quickly ended the call.
She told the sales assistant, “I have something to do. I’ll come back later.”
Doris left in a hurry and headed downstairs to the supermarket. Pushing a cart, she checked her shopping list and started placing items inside one by one.
In a two–story supermarket, finding someone could take time. Lewis called again, “I’m at the supermarket. Where are you?”
“I’m in the toiletries section,” Doris replied while picking out shampoo.
“Got it.” Lewis hung up and followed the signs toward the toiletries aisle.
Tall and blessed with movie–star–level good looks, Lewis naturally attracted attention. Many women sneaked glances at him, particularly a few young girls who were blushing with excitement.
“Oh my god, he’s so handsome! I think I need CPR to recover.”
“Which celebrity is this? He’s insanely good–looking, yet I don’t recognize him.”
“This face is exactly my type. I’m officially a fan now!”
Lewis was well aware of his appeal. Since childhood, he had been accustomed to drawing attention.
From a distance, he spotted Doris. Walking over, he considerately took the cart from her hands. “I got it.”
Doris nodded and placed the shampoo, body wash, soap, and detergent into the cart.
Lewis held onto the cart and followed her. “What else do we need?”
“Toilet paper, fruit, and…” Doris checked her phone list.

The two walked through the aisles, looking just like any other ordinary couple shopping together.
Once they had everything, their purchases filled two large shopping bags at checkout.
Before paying. Doris took out her phone and warned Lewis, “This time, you’re not fighting me over it. You already give me plenty of household money every month.”
“Do you really have to be so calculative? Lewis frowned, in his upbringing, paying was a man’s responsibility. “Covering expenses is a man’s job.”
Doris was unimpressed. ‘Mr. Hartman, that’s sexist. Women can earn their own money too, you know?
“That’s not what I meant.” Lewis furrowed his thick brows.
“If there’s no objection, then it’s decided.” Under Doris‘ insistence, Lewis temporarily conceded.
By the time they got home, it was exactly five o’clock.
Doris sorted the vegetables, fruits, and meat she had bought and placed them neatly in the fridge.
Meanwhile, Lewis poured the rice into the storage container. “How about having pasta for dinner tonight?”
“Sure, you cook.” Doris wasn’t skilled at Western cuisine–her specialty was baking.
“Watch me work my magic.” Lewis gathered the ingredients and got started.
Before long, two plates of freshly made tomato pasta were ready.
Having lived abroad for years, Lewis had mastered cooking, both in technique and taste.
-Doris was thoroughly satisfied, giving Lewis multiple thumbs–ups in praise.
Lewis took a sip of water. “Just remember to do the dishes.”
Doris had just finished tidying up when the doorbell rang.
“Who could it be at this hour? Go check,” Doris said, lounging on the sofa, unwilling to move.
With one hand casually tucked into his pocket, Lewis strolled to the entrance and opened the door.
Outside stood two men in uniforms and a female sales representative.
The saleswoman greeted him with a polite smile. “Hello, are you Mr. Hartman? The vanity table you ordered has arrived.”
He had asked Daniel to investigate, and this brand had a strong national reputation, high quality, and a focus on eco- friendly materials.
“Thanks. Come in please.” Lewis stepped aside to let them in.
Doris watched as the workers carried in several large pieces of furniture. Curiously, she got up and walked over, standing behind Lewis. “What’s this?”
“A vanity table,” Lewis replied.
“A vanity table?” Doris looked puzzled. “Why did you buy a vanity table?”
“You don’t have one in your room.” Lewis paused for a moment.

Lewis supervised as they assembled the vanity table and had them confirm everything was in order.
“It looks great. Thank you for your hard work; Doris said, pleased was the exact model she had been eyeing
“Mr. Hartman, you two must be newlyweds, right?” the saleswoman speculated. “We have a high–quality bed that I think you’d like. The saleswoman’s words felt both vague and suggestive to Doris.
Being, someone with a thin skin, her face instantly turned red–like a fully ripened apple.
“No need for now, Lewis said, catching a glimpse of Doris turning her back to them.
“Mr. Hartman, here’s my card. Feel free to contact me if you need anything in the future.” The saleswoman handed over her business card with both hands. “This is a complimentary stool for you. Wishing you a wonderful life.”
After the staff left, silence filled the room.
“What’s wrong?” Lewis asked, looking at Doris‘ back.
“I’ll transfer you the money for the vanity table, Doris said, turning around and looking up at Lewis with her long lashes fluttering. His expression remained unchanged.
“It’s just a vanity table. No biggie,” Lewis said, the corners of his lips curving slightly into a faint smile. “Although we have an agreement, we are legally married. While our marriage lasts, I will fulfill my responsibilities as a husband. You don’t have to feel uneasy.”
