Chapter 9
Harrison had been talking for ages, and when he saw I remained silent, he was about to
start yelling at me. Cali couldn’t take it anymore and chimed in.
“Lydia, after all, Harrison’s a man–did you really have to speak so harshly?”
I gave a cold laugh.
“Cali, this is between him and me. Why are you getting involved?”
Cali was furious. She grabbed the phone and shouted at me.
“Lydia, are you getting too full of yourself? If you hadn’t stirred things up, would it have
come to this?”
“How did I never realize you were this kind of person?”
I was intrigued and pressed her, asking what kind of person she thought I was.
“Lydia, you know Harrison has always treated you well! Yet you don’t know how to
appreciate it!”
“It’s one thing to be a little willful and throw the occasional tantrum, but to run away from the wedding and embarrass him publicly? That’s too much!”
I responded bluntly,
“If he’s so great, why don’t you marry him?”
That comment made Cali see red.
“Fine! Since you don’t want him, don’t blame me for stepping in! Just don’t regret it later!”
I told her not to worry. If someone was willing to pick up the trash I threw away, it only meant he wasn’t dirty enough for them yet. I hung up and blocked her number as well.
In my phone, there was still a video, anonymously sent to me on Valentine’s Day. That night, I had asked Harrison to go to the movies, but he claimed he had to work late. I tried

inviting Cali, but she also said she was busy. Then, out of nowhere, this video came in. I had been tempted to catch them in the act, to confront them and ask what I had done wrong for them to treat me this way.
That night, I stood in the freezing, ten–degree–below–zero wind for an hour. And in that cold, I woke up. If there was no love, then there was no need to force it. I wasn’t even planning to attend the wedding from that point on. But they kept pushing me, so now they couldn’t blame me for being ruthless.
I uploaded the video of the two of them cheating, along with a caption:
“They say to beware of fire, thieves, and your best friend. Who knew my best friend and my boyfriend would end up together? I was willing to let it go, but they pushed me to this.”
The video caused an uproar, and the news of Harrison’s affair spread throughout the entire
city overnight.
“This guy’s got some nerve, yelling thief to catch a thief!”
“How come I never thought of this? No wonder women would flock to him!”
“Turns out they’re the real side–pieces in this story!”
