Chapter 4
I felt oddly relieved, as if a weight had lifted from my shoulders. But Lucy, hearing Jeffrey’s apology, was far from satisfied. “Jeffrey, don’t say such nonsense. You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s “her* fault for not fulfilling her duties as a wife.”
“Who gets married without the intention of having children to carry on the family line? Having children is a woman’s mission. Why does she think she’s so special, refusing to have. children and choosing to be DINK?”
“Sure, being DINK might feel good now, but who will care for you when you’re old? Who will take care of your body when you’re gone?”
“I never supported you hiding this from her, but you were too kindhearted. In ancient times, a woman like her would have been labeled a witch. Jeffrey, tell her right now that you want a divorce.”
Jeffrey hesitated, “Mom, Rebecca is still young. Given time, she’ll understand and agree to
have children.”
Sylvia, hearing this, frowned slightly and let her tears fall, “Rebecca, love is innocent. It just so happened that Jeffrey and I fell in love. I didn’t intend to target you or take anything
from you.”
“I only ask that you let me give birth to this child. The child is innocent. I promise, once the baby is born, I’ll leave and never come back.”
Lucy paused in surprise. “Nonsense! If you leave, what about the child? Do you think this woman will care properly for your child?”
Sylvia nodded, “Auntie, I trust Rebecca. Rebecca is kind–hearted. And since she can’t have children herself, I’m sure she would be devoted if I left the baby in her care.”
“Wait.” Jeffrey interrupted, “Did you say Rebecca can’t have children? What does that
mean?”
Sylvia feigned shock, covering her mouth, “What? You didn’t know?”
