Chapter 5
Jeffrey suddenly looked at me sharply. “Rebecca, tell me clearly–do you not like children, or can you actually not have any?”
I rolled my eyes inwardly. “Does it even matter? Whether I don’t want kids or can’t have them doesn’t change the fact that you betrayed our marriage, that you betrayed me.”
Jeffrey’s face darkened, and he nodded. “Of course it matters. If you simply don’t like kids, you could change your mind someday. But if you can’t have them, then…”
It dawned on me that Jeffrey, who had agreed so readily to be DINK, had actually been waiting all along, expecting me to change my mind about having children.
Annoyed, I interrupted him. “I chose not to have kids because-
Before I could finish, Sylvia cut me off, giving me an apologetic look. “I thought you all knew. Actually, Rebecca loves children. Her dream has always been to be a mother. Isn’t that right, Rebecca?”
I nodded, “Yes, I…”
Lucy staggered back, her anger boiling over. “All these years, I’ve been patient, I’ve waited, thinking maybe you were just young and would come around someday. But it turns out you’re just a hen who can’t lay eggs!”
“I don’t care how much you love this wretch, Jeffrey. Today, you must divorce her. If you don’t, I’ll throw myself out of here right now.”
Jeffrey looked deeply conflicted, and after a long silence, he sighed. “Given the situation, let’s just get divorced.”
I didn’t hesitate for long. I swallowed the truth about Jeffrey’s infertility, then nodded calmly. “Divorce it is, but you’re the one at fault here. You’ll leave with nothing.”
