Chapter 10
When I said that, Sylvia and Jeffrey didn’t immediately understand, but Lucy, who was standing close enough, heard it clearly. She immediately grabbed my hand, “What did you just say? Say it again!”
I took out the old premarital checkup results from my bag. “I’ve kept these test results for years. Didn’t think they’d come in handy, but here you go. Take a look.”
Lucy snatched the results from me, her eyes darting across the pages.
I sighed. “Actually, Sylvia was right–I’ve always loved children. When Jeffrey and I did our premarital checkup, we found out that he’s infertile. I wasn’t sure if we should still get married, so I asked Jeffrey if he’d still want to marry me without children.”
“At the time, Jeffrey swore that having me was more than enough. His sincerity moved me, so I decided to marry him. And to protect his pride, I told everyone it was me who didn’t want kids.”
“I was even planning to adopt a child after a few years.”
I smiled slightly. “But miracles do happen. Look, your love was so strong it touched the heavens and created a medical miracle–a man who couldn’t have children now has a child
of his own.”
“But…
I paused, “What was that joke about an unloaded gun that somehow managed to shoot a bear dead? Oh, right–it’s because someone else’s gun was loaded. Makes you wonder if this miracle came from someone else’s loaded gun too.”
Lucy didn’t fully grasp the joke, but she could clearly read the words “infertility” on the test results. Her face turned livid. “Jeffrey, we’re going to the hospital now. I need to get to the bottom of this!”
Jeffrey, looking at the yellowed test results in confusion, nodded.
