Chapter 9 The Skilled Doctor
Nobody welcomed her arrival. They were all trying to chase her off.
Margaret found it funny. Her cool gaze moved over Laney, Alice, and Andy’s faces, one after another. Then she yanked her arm free from Samson’s grip. With a smirk, she said, “Fine, I’m leaving.”
She thought to herself, “Remember, you’re the ones

at she was back soon after. She put her hand up to her ear, tucking a strand of hair behind it. Mr. Hawthorne, do you know why I came to Mount Sinai Medical Center today?”
Samson looked at her delicate face, with a soft layer of fine hair that added to her striking beauty. His expression was icy, showing no interest at all. His voice was cold. “Margaret, if bothering me, you’ll make me sick.”

Margaret stepped closer and gave him a soft smile. “I’m here to get you a skilled doctor.” She handed him a small card. “This is for you.”
Samson looked down at it. The card seemed a little suggestive, like the one which was slipped under the door.
It read: Traditional skilled doctor, heir to a family legacy, specializes in addressing a range of infertility concerns, restoring the joy of masculinity.
Contact number: XXXXXXXX.
Samson’s usually calm face broke into a frown.
Margaret slipped the card into his pocket. “Mr. Hawthorne, Alice and you are both sick. Look after yourselves and get some medical help.”
With that, Margaret turned and walked
away.
Samson’s hands, hanging loosely by his sides, suddenly balled into fists. He realized this woman always knew how to push his buttons.
Alice piped up, “Samson, let it go. There’s no point arguing with Margaret. She’s not worth it.” Laney nodded in agreement. “Yeah, where is Master C?”
The mention of Master C made everyone anxious.
Master C was Alice’s last hope.
Samson took a quick look at his watch. The time they agreed on had already passed, but Master C hadn’t shown up yet.
Just then, a medical staff walked in. “Mr. Hawthorne.”
Alice, Andy, and Laney’s eyes brightened. “Is Master C here?”
The medical staff looked at Samson. “Mr. Hawthorne, Master C is already here.” What?
Samson glanced out but only spotted Margaret.
Margaret turned a corner and vanished from sight.

Samson frowned, “I didn’t see Master C.”
The medical staff said, “Master C was here and then left.”
Alice, Andy, and Laney’s faces fell. “Why? Why would Master C leave? She hasn’t saved Alice yet.”
The medical staff apologized, “I’m sorry, but Master C won’t be able to help Ms. Collins anymore.”
Alice’s usually bright face drained of color. She didn’t expect that Master C would refuse to save

The joy they felt moments ago was instantly quenched, leaving everyone stunned.
Alice broke down, sobbing, “Why didn’t Master C save me? Why?”
Andy and Laney immediately wrapped their arms around Alice, comforting her gently, “Alice, don’t worry. We’ll find a way to get

Samson’s face hardened, his gaze icy as he stared down the vacant hallway, radiating a sense of isolation and menace.

Margaret was leaving the hospital when someone shouted at her, “Maggie.” She turned around to see Laney.
Laney hurried after her.
Laney stepped in front of Margaret. “Maggie, this is for you.”
Margaret glanced down at the check. It was 3,200 dollars.
Laney said, “Maggie, Mr. Hawthorne doesn’t like you, so stop bothering him. Let Alice have him Why not just divorce Mr. Hawthorne, take this money, and go back to the countryside to live your life?
Margaret felt a bitter irony. If she hadn’t secretly done a DNA test for Laney and Alice, she might have thought Alice was Laney’s biological daughter. But that was
Laney was Alice’s stepmom.
But Laney loved Alice more than her own daughter.
Margaret knew Laney was infatuated with Andy, so she also loved Alice. Margaret met Laney’s eyes, a slight smile on her lips. “Is the position of Mrs. Hawthorne worth only this much money, or is that all I’m worth to you?”
Laney was caught off guard and then defended, “Maggie, I’m doing this for your own good. This place isn’t right for you…”
Mom?
Hearing the unfamiliar address, Margaret couldn’t help but smile, “You’ve already sent me off to the countryside once. Now you want to do it again? You’re such a caring mother!” Without another glance at her, Margaret got into a taxi and left.

Inside the taxi, Margaret sat in the back, pulled out a piece of candy from her bag, and slowly unwrapped it, popping it into her mouth.
The driver glanced at her in the mirror. She was dressed elegantly, her calm demeanor giving off a strong presence.
But up close, her skin was fair, and she looked thin and fragile.
The driver, who had a daughter around her age, smiled and asked, “Miss, you like candy a lot, huh?”
t looked up, a gentle breeze blowing her hair across her face. She replied softly, “Yeah, a veetness really does help lighten the bitter moments.”
Laney stood rooted to the spot, watching as Margaret’s car drove away.
Just then, someone approached and called out, “Mrs. Collins.”
Laney turned to see who it was and was surprised to find David Walker from the Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Laney quickly approached and said, “Hi, Dr. Walker. You’ve got such a broad network. Could you possibly ask Master C to help treat my daughter Alice?”
David replied, “Mrs. Collins, I happen to know Master C and can introduce you to her.” Laney was thrilled. “Really? Thank you so much, Dr. Walker.”
At that moment, David glanced in the direction Margaret had left. A sly smile crept onto his face as he said, “Mrs. Collins, is that your eldest daughter returning from the countryside? I didn’t expect her to be so stunning. For a moment, I thought I’d seen an angel.”
Laney’s smile faded, and she became calm and detached.
