Chapter 5
After a long night of emotional turmoil, I finally sent him a message:
[John, let’s end it.]
Afterward, I numbly washed my face and brushed my teeth, preparing to go to class.
My roommate, seeing my swollen eyes, asked:
“What happened, Zoe? Didn’t you sleep well last night?”
out a bitter laugh. “Ugh, just nightmares.”
It was already past ten when I received John’s reply.
If I remembered correctly, he didn’t have class today.
[Zoe, what do you mean, ‘end it‘?]
I stared at his words, my eyes growing heavy with tears.
Hooked up and saw him standing on the lawn outside the classroom, just a short distance away.
I saw him lower his head and kiss Olivia for what seemed like a long time, then wave goodbye to her.
Afterward, he pulled out his phone and started typing something.
His brow furrowed, his face showing a hint of impatience.
I looked down and saw his messages flooding in:
[What time do you finish class? I’ll pick you up.]
[What do you want to eat? I’ll take you wherever you want.]
A deep sadness washed over me. The person I had known for ten years felt so strange to me now!
I tentatively texted, [What are you doing?]
Without a second thought, he replied:
[Just finished cleaning up in the dorm. How about it? Let’s go to lunch.]
My heart dropped. I forced a hollow smile.
The bell rang, signaling the end of class, and I immediately called him.
“John, stop lying to me. You were just with Olivia, weren’t you?”
John’s voice trembled slightly, as though caught off guard.
But he still denied it. “What are you talking about, Zoe? I don’t understand.”
“I’m saying we should break up, John!”
To my surprise, John’s reaction was completely unexpected.
His voice was devoid of any warmth, even strangely calm:

I hung up the phone.
Turning my head, I saw John a short distance away, and to my shock, he looked almost relieved…
Ding.
After a moment, his text came through:
[You’ve finally let me go.]
[You know about your family situation, we couldn’t have lasted anyway.]
