On the way back, my phone rang:
“Hello? Hello?”
“I’m John.”
I was about to hang up when he quickly added:
“Wait! Don’t hang up! I need to talk to you.”

I don’t know what kind of force John used, but Olivia let out a miserable scream.
She wailed, “I… I’m sorry, Zoe.”
Instead of responding to her, I said to John:
“Is this funny to you, John? You made the mistake, so you’re the one who should apologize!”
“Bullying a pregnant woman – that’s something you’re actually capable of?!”
On the other end of the phone, Olivia ‘s cries only grew louder:
“Yes, John, I’m still carrying your child!”
But John was completely unmoved. His voice dropped low as he said to me:
“Zoe, could you… lend me some money? I need it so she can have an abortion…”
“That way, I can be with you again, and we can start over.”
“If it weren’t for her seducing me, I never would’ve broken up with you in the first place.”
I was utterly stunned by his words.
Every part of me was burning with anger.
How could he even say something like this?
“Get lost! Don’t ever insult me again!”
I was trembling all over, unable to stop myself from gagging.
How could a person be this disgusting?
I couldn’t bring myself to eat dinner that night. Lying in bed, I mechanically reviewed the ten years we had spent together.
As a teenager, he had been as bright as the sun.
But how had he become like this?
As I thought about it, a text message from an unfamiliar number caught my attention:
[Zoe, this is Olivia. I have something important to tell you about your birth mother. Meet me on the roof of the teaching building, alone.]
She sent a picture of a gold necklace, one I clearly rememb
