Love Story7–Chapter 1
Love Story7–Chapter 1
I broke up with Mack Washington.
It happened on the second anniversary of our relationship, the day we both lost our memories in a car accident.
Close friends visited us in the hospital and informed us that we were a couple.
Mack gave me a once–over and, raising his eyebrows, decisively concluded:
“Since neither of us remembers, let’s call it quits.”
derstood what he meant but hesitated out of concern:
“But what if we regain our memories someday? Won’t we regret it? Besides, everyone else knows about our relationship.”
He chuckled lightly, completely confident:
“If you truly love someone, even if you forget, the feeling of love won’t go away. And as for regaining memories, who can say for sure?”
Exactly. Even the doctors couldn’t guarantee when–or if–we’d recover our memories. They simply suggested that we try to revisit familiar people or activities from before the accident, as it might help.
The doctors explained that memory loss comes in many forms. Ours was likely selective amnesia, erasing only our romantic relationship and memories of each other.
Everything else and everyone else remained crystal clear.
This kind of memory loss is typically the brain or heart’s defense mechanism against severe trauma, locking away painful memories. Unless the patient sincerely wants to unlock them, external interventions have little effect.
One visiting friend, upon hearing this explanation, jokingly summarized:
“So basically, you can’t wake someone up if they’re pretending to sleep.”
I bowed my head, breathing softly, then glanced at Mack, who pursed his lips without speaking. He turned his face away and scoffed:
“If you’re willing to forget, it means it wasn’t important.”
True enough
One person forgetting might be a coincidence.
Two people forgetting could only mean it wasn’t important.
When I first woke up in the hospital and saw him, I learned he was my boyfriend but had no recollection of him. Nervously, I met his scrutinizing gaze and apologized:
“I’m sorry, I don’t remember you.”
To my surprise, he sighed in relief and even smiled:
“It’s fine. I don’t remember you either.”
And just like that, our two year–long relationship officially ended.
Mark even eagerly posted on social media:
“The end”
The first comment came from Pearl Forbs, who teased:
