Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Soon enough, I learned the answer-
Pearl Forbs was planning to get back together with her ex.
Mack Washington, who had spent all that time hovering around her, ended up with nothing for his efforts. His frustration was understandable.
Looking back, the signs had always been there.
Even after they broke up, Pearl and her ex would still play games together.
en they ran into each other on campus, they would exchange lingering glances.
In our dorm room, she often referred to him as “my ex- -hubby.”
Every affectionate interaction she had with Mack was calculated, designed to stir jealousy in her ex.
Mack’s objections couldn’t sway Pearl’s decision. She even smiled at him sweetly, saying,
“Are you sure you’re not overstepping, Mack?”
“You’re not really thinking of me as your girlfriend, are you?”
“Haven’t we always just been good friends?”
Not only that, but Pearl took it upon herself to play matchmaker for Mack and me, claiming it was for our benefit.
“You two should just get back together already,” she advised earnestly. “That way, you won’t waste your time meddling in other people’s relationships. If you’re together again, you won’t cause trouble for anyone else.”
She began orchestrating scenarios to “rekindle” our memories.
At the dining hall, she would drag Mack over to sit in front of me, cheerfully pointing out,
“Back in the day, you
always ate together here.”
“This spot was perfect for the tree outside–it’s green in summer and golden in autumn.”
Then, as if on cue, she’d get a phone call, apologize, and hurry off, leaving me and Mack awkwardly facing each other.
I continued eating leisurely.
Mack sat with a grim expression, not touching his food.
In the library, Pearl would pull Mack to sit beside me, saying,
“Mack used to always study with you.”
“Recreating the scene might help with recovering memories.”
But she’d quickly make an excuse to leave, leaving me engrossed in my notes while Mack stared blankly at his unopened laptop.
All of this felt oddly familiar–it was all in my journal.
Even Mack’s expressions mirrored what I had written down.
Could Pearl really not know who Mack cared about?
And did Mack not realize what Pearl was doing?
It was tiresome.
One day, when Pearl once again sat Mack across from me at the dining hall, I set down my cwo

“Feelings that can be forgotten weren’t that deep to begin with. Even if the memories come back, we won’t get back together.”
Pearl froze in place.
I stood up, ready to leave, Mack called out to me from where he stood by the window, the tree branches swaying outside. His gaze was restrained searching.
“You… really don’t remember anything at all?”
“No.”
After that, I stopped eating in the dining hall.
avoided studying in the library.
Teered clear of any path where I might run into them.
Life returned to quiet normalcy, revolving around classes and tutoring sessions.
I tutored three times a week, focusing on math, physics, and chemistry.
Coincidentally, Brain Warrick was always there during these sessions.
On rainy days, he’d still drive me back to campus.
Somehow, over time, he started showing up whether it rained or not, always holding his car keys when I finished my lessons.
Bit by bit, we grew familiar with each other again.
Meanwhile, Pearl officially got back together with her ex. She posted on social media:
“After all this time, it’s still you.”
The comments were filled with congratulatory wishes: “Forever 99~!”
But notably absent was any comment from Mack Washington.
Even when Pearl later fought with her boyfriend and ended up stranded in the rain, Mack didn’t show up to pick her up.
I figured he was just sulking again.
f
Once his anger faded, surely he’d go back to caring for her.
