Chapter 16
Whitney thought that Julius‘ family might be the sort she read about in novels about high society, so she imagined that they might do something like offer her a lot of money to leave Julius or look down on her just because she wasn’t some tycoon’s daughter. But she soon found out that Julius‘ parents were not arrogant and indifferent as she had thought.
In fact, Jacqueline seemed so easygoing that Whitney felt like Jacqueline wasn’t quite the way she remembered her from her previous life either.
The disparity between the wonderful reality and the imagined orrible mother–in–law froze Whitney for a short while, leaving her unable to process Jacqueline’s question. She just stared at Jacqueline blankly without responding.
Jacqueline realized that her sternness earlier must have frightened this poor girl when she saw how Whitney was just looking at her and not saying anything-
“Oh dear, Whitney, it’s really alright, you don’t have to be scared I don’t mean any harm, I just want to be friends with you. No wait, that’s not what I was supposed to say,” Jacqueline rambled as she suddenly remembered her conversation with Bernard from the night before. “No, I want to become, oh dear, that’s not it either.”
“Oh no, that’s not it either!” Jacqueline looked like she was trying very hard to recall exactly what Bernard said to her.
Her stumped and frustrated expression made Whitney burst out with laughter
“Mom. I know what you’re trying to say. You just want to get along with me, right?”
“Yes! That’s it! I spotted you immediately among all those people in the living room just now because you’re so pretty!” Jacqueline was relieved to see that Whitney finally seemed a lot more relaxed now.
The last thing she wanted was to make herself look like a strict mother–in–law.
Even though her son was excellent at his work and many other things, he was still single at 24 and didn’t even seem to have any female friends or anybody he was vaguely interested in.

Then, just a few months ago, she heard that he had registered his marriage to a girl.
Jacqueline had been so elated that she nearly threw a party.
Not only did Julius get a girlfriend, but he married her!
Then, she suddenly thought of something and became serious again as she asked Whitney, “Whitney, did you marry Julius out of your own free will?”
Even though she was really thrilled that her son was married, she wanted to make sure Whitney had been a willing party in all of this. She didn’t want her son to force anybody into marrying him.
Whitney was surprised by the question for a moment before nodding her head.
Their marriage didn’t have the best start, but at least she was now sincere about being a good wife to Julius
“But I heard…” Jacqueline paused for a moment, unsure of whether she ought to mention what she had heard about Whitney’s behavior. Thankfully, Whitney was smart enough to share what Jacqueline was thinking about.
Mom was too immature back then, which caused us to argue alot. But we’ve ironed things out now, so we’ll live happily together from now on,” said Whitney sincerely.
That was the first thing Julius overheard after he rushed over to check on whether Whitney was doing alright with his mother.

He immediately froze and continued listening to their conversation.
The two women had no idea that he was there at all. Jacqueline continued, “I know my son well. He’s always a rather extreme person, and the more important a thing is to him, the more fiercely he’ll protect it.”
She realized her words didn’t seem appropriate, so she quickly added, “I’m not saying that you’re a thing.”
Whitney smiled and said, “I understand what you’re saying. There are times when the methods he uses aren’t the best, but I’m willing to slowly help him change for the better?
Jacqueline was glad to hear this and smiled brightly at Whitney. Im happy enough to know that you’re willing to do this. As a woman myself, I know that any woman would prefer to start getting to know their partner better before falling in love and getting married. But as a mother, I hope that you could take good care of my son and stay by his side.
“I will do that.” Whitney was both promising Jacqueline as well as reminding herself to do just that,
“Oh! Let me bring you somewhere else!” Jacqueline led Whitney elsewhere, but Julius remained standing where he was.
Any woman would prefer to start by getting to know their partner better before falling in love? What his mother said really impacted him.
So, he had been wrong right from the start.
He looked down at the floor with an increasingly determined expression, and he seemed to have made a decision Meanwhile, Jacqueline had brought Whitney to that special room she rarely showed anyone else. “Wait here,” she said. Whitney watched as Jacqueline found a stool, climbed it, then started looking for something on the top shelf of a cupboard
in the room.
“Found it Jacqueline nimbly jumped off the stool and presented a box to Whitney like she had found some treasure. But instead of opening it, Whitney continued to just stare at Jacqueline.
“Go on, open it.”
Whitney took the box from Jacqueline and opened it to see an intricately carved bangle lying inside.
“Do you like it?” Jacqueline looked eagerly at Whitney.
Whitney did like it, but this bangle didn’t look like any ordinary bangle. There was definitely some significance to it.
She nodded honestly but also asked, “Is this bangle of some significance?”
“Well, as long as you like it, then it’s yours.” Jacqueline didn’t answer Whitney’s question and immediately offered it to Whitney instead.
Whitney opened her mouth to speak but Jacqueline took the bangle out of its box and put it on for her. “Since it’s for you. just accept it.”
She didn’t want to make Jacqueline unhappy, so she just nodded
“Let’s go back out then. Otherwise, Julius might think I’m bullying you since we’ve been away for so long, joked Jacqueline as she led Whitney back to the living room.
Once they entered the living room again, everyone’s eyes fell back on Whitney.
To be exact, everyone was drawn to the bangle on Whitney’s wrEST.

Everyone’s expression was different.
Whitney already had a hunch that this bangle wasn’t just some random bangle, and the stares she was getting now proved that she was right.
Their staring made her feel very uncomfortable, so she instinctively began looking for Julius
Just then, she spotted him coming in
Com the back.
The moment he walked in, everyone stopped staring at Whitney and looked elsewhere instead.
Whitney was relieved that they had stopped staring, but she also wondered why Julius had come from the back garden as
well.
“Mom gave me this bangle.” Whitney decided to ask the more important question next.
Julius looked down at the arm that Whitney raised and said in his usual indulgent voice, Just accept it and don’t worry about
it
“Is there something special about this bangle?
