chapter 6
He cautiously handed the kidnapper a check. “Three billion, right? I’ll give it to you, I will, is that enough?”
Taking advantage of the kidnapper’s brief moment of distraction, he pressed the emergency
button in his pocket.
The kidnapper became even angrier and raised the knife toward him.
“You dare call the police?!”
Blood loss had caused a ringing in my ears, and I could feel my vision going black as I lay on the ground. Finally, amid Johnny’s panicked shout, I completely lost consciousness.
In the chaotic dream, I seemed to return to the past.
Back to five years ago, when I was studying abroad and accidentally found Nico’s father collapsed by the side of the road. After I rushed him to the hospital, Nico arrived in a hurry not long after.
“Thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, I really wouldn’t know what to do.”
Nico’s young and passionate gaze instantly struck my heart. It was I who fell for him first.
The scene changed rapidly, and I was in our wedding night, with Nico silently turning his
back to me.
“Behave, and I’ll make sure you get what you deserve.”
He deliberately kept his distance, spoke little, but it hurt my heart.
How could I not understand? His feelings for Rosalie were undeniable.
But what did I do wrong? If he didn’t like me, he didn’t have to marry me. Why marry me only to put me in such an uncomfortable position?
I didn’t understand, and I didn’t want to anymore.
I lost track of time, but gradually began to wake up. I opened my eyes to the white ceiling of
ла
a hospital room.
“Madam, you’re awake?!”
Johnny, who had been sitting beside me, jumped up in surprise, his face full of awkwardness.
“Thank goodness, thank goodness the police arrived in time, or I really would’ve lost my job.”
“Don’t worry, the kidnapper who hurt you is in custody now. You don’t have to be afraid!”
/ His constant talking only made the pain worse, and I instinctively turned my head away.
Johnny fell silent, looking guilty.
“I really didn’t think it was real, Madam. I’m so sorry.”
What good was his late apology?
At that moment, a familiar voice came from outside the hospital room.
“Rosalie, how are you feeling now?”
Rosalie softly replied, “I’m not dizzy anymore, but it’s a pity it delayed my trip to Iceland.”
Hearing that, Johnny rushed out.
“Mr. Turner!”
He called out, a bit confused.
“Weren’t you supposed to be in Iceland?”
Nico’s expression was calm.
“Rosalie wasn’t feeling well, so I came back. By the way, why are you here?”
I lay in the hospital bed, my abdomen hurting badly, listening to Johnny’s fragmented explanation.
“Madam was injured, so I brought her here. Mr. Turner, would you like to come in and see
her?
Before the man could respond, a doctor entered the room and stood by my bed, his tone
grave.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Evelynn, but you lost the baby. I truly apologize.”
The baby?!
instinctively touched my now–flat stomach, and all the strange symptoms from the past
few weeks made sense now.
No wonder I had been feeling dizzy, nauseous, and having a delayed period.
I had just assumed it was because I was too tired…
