Kara looked at Volkov, and for a moment she felt bad for the father who had to deal with his son. There were so many blanks, and maybe if they found out what Drescher had heard, maybe it would give his father closure. Maybe it would make the man understand how the fuck his son had changed so much. It would give him a chance to make things right no matter what happened along the way. Maybe those answers would also give Ralph the closure she needed since if Drescher couldn’t open up to his family, there was just no way that he would open up to Ralphine.
Everything was just questions upon questions. Drescher Volkov was proving to be the hardest battle for his father and it hurt to watch the poor man frustrated like that. Maybe it would take them a while to get to the bottom of it all. But until then Kara could only hope that the man wasn’t asking for his son’s life to be spared because that was an impossible task. The man had made King Miroslav prepare for the worst in the craziest of ways, and more than anything, he had traumatized the Lycan queen.
Even if their queen wanted to forgive Drescher, for some twisted reason probably linked to humanity and all its faults, the Asmoria Lycans were never going to be open for that discussion. They would fuck Drescher up in ways that the deities hadn’t even invented yet. And they would do it with sinister smiles on their faces. That in itself wasn’t negotiable. It was the one thing that laid the foundation for horrors because the Lycans would get blood and more specifically, Drescher Volkov’s blood.
“What is it you ask, Volkov?” Queen Ralphine asked gently, her heart shattering for the man with a defective son. She wanted to help him as it was her first instinct, but then a part of her would always resent Drescher for what he had done to her. Nothing would ever be enough to make Drescher pay for the pain he had caused Ralph and the king would make sure that he never lived to see the next day. That in itself was the one thing that even Queen Ralphine would never convince the Lycan King to let go of. So, she could only hope this man couldn’t ask for the life of his son because they were way past the redemption stage anyway.
“When you eventually capture and kill him, please let me have his body so I can bury him. I am unable to bury my wife, but please, he is still my son. I didn’t ask for his life because I know that cannot happen even if you’re not opposed to it. All I ask is to see the body of my son once you are done with him. It doesn’t matter whether he is torn to pieces. Just please, Your Highness.
“Please grant this failed father this one request. I swear I won’t ask for much, not even the freedom of my girls. Just please,” Volkov pleaded with the Queen, and Ralph once again felt terrible for the pitiful man bowing before her. The broken father looked like a nice person, one who could give everything for his children and one who had so many regrets linked to Drescher. Sure, Ralph never interacted with the high–borns in the pack, but he could tell from the whispers that Volkov was a good man. Maybe she could give him that, right?
“I cannot promise that it will be so, especially with the way things are heated up in the kingdom, Volkov,” Ralph began as she looked at the father and his two daughters. He could tell that that wasn’t the kind of news they wanted to hear, but then they didn’t have that many choices with them as they had to accept whatever was coming their way. They could only hope that there would be some sort of light at the end of the damned tunnels they were thrown into by Drescher. Maybe there could be a better explanation for it all and even if there wasn’t, they could only hope for closure.
“I understand, your majesty,” Volkov said sincerely. He hadn’t expected much anyway because he didn’t have the best of sons in the realm. His son had made him question everything he lived for for over a long period and he was not going to expect much from the very person his son had wronged one too many times. That is all I can promise at the moment. He didn’t have much of an option, but as he listened to her, and how she was trying to comfort him, he knew she had a heart of god. He had been right the first time. The high guard could finally understand why the Lycans found their queen likable and admirable. She had a heart of gold in the midst of the chaos. She was better than most of them because most of the Lycans would have been beasts and crueler than life if they had been the victims of Drescher like their Queen had been. Well, this heart of gold was all they needed to keep their lands sane and they were thankful for that.
“I’ll only say this once. If you betray the queen, not even your tooth will be found in existence, alright?” Kara said with a smile before she walked out the door, leaving the Volkovs scared shirtless. Well, this was Drescher’s doing after all, right? But even then, Kara still didn’t know what Drescher had done to her and that was messing with her head.
Perhaps she would find her answers soon, right?
