For the next few days, Grant didn’t come home, and I didn’t ask. I quietly contacted my friends to retrieve the wedding invitations.
Grant didn’t care for big weddings so we had only invited our closest friends. They were all surprised when they heard this.
“Why are you canceling the wedding? You guys seemed so sweet,” they asked.
I didn’t know how to answer that. Sweet? If his long–time coldness could be called sweetness, then fine.
The only one who was sweet in this relationship was me.
I finally came clean.“I’m having a new werewolf.”
Everyone laughed. Nobody took that seriously. Given my past devotion to Grant, it was impossible
But that was fine. I would prove them wrong. This time, I meant it.
I
got back all the invitations and went back home. Grant came back right after me. His white shirt which was usually neat and clean, wrinkled. His eyes bloodshot, his demeanor listless. I immediately sensed his distress.
The first words out of his mouth mirrored my actions.“Get those wedding invitations back. My mentor passed away. In honor of him, I can’t get married for six months.”
He expected me to freak out, to argue. He knew how eager I was to marry him and how much my grandpa wanted to come to my wedding. He’d even thought about how to persuade me, but I was surprisingly calm.
“Okay. I’m sorry for your loss.”
Grant was taken aback. That was not the reaction he expected. It seemed, since that night, I’d become a different person. Although he found me strange, he didn’t have the energy to think about why. He rubbed his tired eyes.
“His memorial is today. He spoke of you before he passed. I’m taking you there.”
I didn’t like Wanda, but I respected her father. He was a kind alpha. He surely wouldn’t approve of what his daughter was doing. I nodded, agreeing to go.
Grant cleaned up, changed clothes, and took me to the memorial.
As soon as we arrived, we heard a wail.“Grant…”
I saw Wanda, dressed in black, collapsing to the ground in tears.
“Wanda!”
Grant rushed to her side, gently cradling her. Without looking up, he said, “Rosie, you go I’ll stay with her.”

Watching his tender and concerning face, I wondered if Wanda was his partner.
The past me would have freaked out. But I was no longer that stupid girl. I merely glanced at them before turning and walking away.
