Grant left, dejected. He remembered our first meeting. That was a full moon night. I was holding a dying kitten, desperately seeking help. I had been frantic, my heart aching for the tiny life that struggled in my arms.
Finally, someone told me there was a late–night pet hospital. I bumped into him as I rushed to that pet hospital. I kept apologizing and he saw the dying kitten in my arms. Knowing what was going on, he joined me.
Unfortunately, we failed to rescue that kitten. He gave me a tissue when I was crying.
Perhaps that was why I fell in love with him. Later, I kept asking him out but he never agreed. I used every trick in the book of love, and finally we got together.
However, his mentor’s health worsened. He knew that alpha in his pack loved Wanda the most, so he took on the role of caring for Wanda. He never intended to betray me, but we still separated.
He’d been too confident that he thought I would never leave him. But wolves, too, are bound by the changing tides of life, and my departure proved to him how wrong he had been.
When he knew it, it was too late.
He left the hospital, his back frail and lonely. His wolf, once so proud and commanding, now felt small, diminished by his choices. Wanda was waiting for him. He’s Wanda’s alpha now.
“Grant, I’ll take
you
home.”
I’ll never let you go, even if it kills me. Wanda thought.
In the room, Jake looked at our daughter, content. I poked him.
“What’s her name?”
“Still thinking. Grandpa decides the given name, we decide the nickname. What do you think?” I nodded, then asked about the nickname. He shook his head.“My parents said I sucked on this. So, it’s up to you.”
I was curious.“Why would they say that? Tell me about the names you
“Mary, Lucy, Amy.”
offered.”
I know he was waiting for me to side with him, but I couldn’t.“Let’s call her Lily.”
Lily it was. Grandpa was in better health. Hearing he was gonna name his great–granddaughter, he was delighted.“What about Elizabeth?”
I liked it.
We never mentioned the previous night. We knew where we were headed now.
