That night, I had a high fever. Grant didn’t come back, and I was too weak even to call 911. I managed to find some pills and swallowed them down with water, then collapsed back into bed, burning up with fever. Finally, I drifted into a feverish sleep.
After a day and night, the fever went down. I heard the door open.
Grant walked in, ignoring me, packing his bags. Only when he was finished did he finally give me a glance.
“Wanda’s not doing well. I’ll be with her for a few days. Call me if you need anything.”
Seeing him leave without a second glance, I chuckled bitterly. What good would a phone call do? I was pale and ill, and he didn’t even notice. Could I really expect him to leave Wanda for me?
NO MORE! The wolf inside me howled again. But this time, I heard a quiet, decisive voice. I couldn’t be the one to chase after a man who was not my true mate, who couldn’t even look at me when I was sick.
The next few days, Grant never returned, nor did he call me. Yet, I knew exactly where he was, thanks to Wanda’s incessant updates on Moments. I saw pictures of him making her soup, peeling shrimp, taking her out for walks and fireworks…
I didn’t pay much attention to what they were doing. Once I recovered, I resigned from my job. “Rosie, why are you quitting? What happened?” My colleagues were shocked, but I just shook my head.
“I’ve been away from home pack for years, it’s time to go back.”
This explanation only confused them further. Someone finally asked, “What about Grant? He lives here. Aren’t you making it a long–distance thing?”
I paused. My friends all knew I loved Grant, that I’d sacrificed everything for him. Even they were used to me being the one who kept giving. After all, the only thing I got from Grant was indifference.
I smiled faintly.“It’s not long–distance. We’re over.”

My voice was so calm that no one could tell I was lying.“The company’s moving, so I brought my stuff back.”
“Moving? To where?” He frowned. Before I could answer, Wanda interrupted.
“Rosie, I’ve been in a bad mood because of my father’s illness. I can’t believe I asked Grant to have a child with me. It was really stupid. Nothing happened between us. Now that Dad’s gone, don’t need a child anymore. Grant will be the next Alpha of Nightfall pack without me. I’m sorry.”

She looked so sincere. If I hadn’t seen that text, I might have believed her. But I didn’t bother calling her out. I simply nodded and went to my room.
I’d barely unpacked when my phone rang. It was in the living room. As I went out to get it, Grant burst in with my phone in hand. His face was grim.
