Ash slammed her hand on the table. “Calvert, you’re leaving without making yourself clear–what’s the deal with that?” she demanded. “Am I supposed to ask Vanessa now? Or should I call Finn and arrange a meeting for us to talk it out? If you have something to say, just say it. Stop beating around the bush.”
Calvert came to a halt. “Why are you so angry?” His voice was calm, yet it carried a hint of helplessness.
“I’m not angry; I’m just discussing the matter at hand with you. You need to give me a reason. After all, Vanessa is the vice president of Funtime Games. And yet, you’re asking her to be at the beck and call of the project leader. Do you think that’s reasonable?” Ash questioned. “Or do you think that because we’re a small company, we must be at your disposal?”
Calvert’s face tightened, his eyes narrowing. “That’s not what I meant,” he said in a serious tone. “Do you really have to twist, my words? As I said, if you ask Vanessa, she’ll give you more details. They’ve worked together before. Finn’s most successful game was co–developed by the two of them. They’ve been friends for years. Does that reason suffice?”
Ash remained silent. She had always been rational and wasn’t easily swayed by her feelings. But whenever it came to Calvert, her emotions seemed to get the better of her.
“I don’t look down on small companies. Every large company starts small. Without a solid foundation, even the biggest ones are just hollow shells. Perhaps I didn’t express myself well,” Calvert added.
Ash let out a soft breath, her clear, bright eyes flickering with a faint light. “I misinterpreted your words. It has nothing to do with you; I was being narrow–minded,” she said. “I’ll discuss this with Vanessa. The final decision is hers. Even if they were partners before, it doesn’t mean she’d be willing to work with him again.”
Ash collected her emotions, her expression becoming indifferent once more.
Calvert sensed the subtle awkwardness between them, and after a brief pause, he nodded. “Alright, handle it as you see fit. Whether Finn works here or not is up to you.”
“Why are you doing so much? Is it really just because of our contract?” Ash abruptly asked. It was a question that had been lingering in her mind.
Their gazes locked, yet Calvert’s deep–set eyes were so inscrutable that Ash couldn’t figure him out.
Calvert placed a hand on the table, his eyes never leaving her. After a long pause, he uttered, “Ash, what do you want to hear? Or rather, what should I say to make you satisfied?” His tone, though calm, carried a hint of tenderness.
He continued to stare at her intently. Ash met his gaze for a moment, then, for some reason, looked away, her thoughts becoming a tangled mess. Things between her and Calvert had taken an unexpected turn. Their relationship shouldn’t have – reached this point.
Ash lowered her eyes, her long lashes fluttering slightly as she spoke in a muffled voice, “I want to hear the truth. What’s the real reason?”
“As you said, since it’s just for show, we should put on a convincing act. This is just the bare minimum, and there’s no need to feel burdened.” Calvert finally shifted his gaze.
She pursed her lips. “Yes, an act. You’re right. It’s just for show.”
Ash felt a bitter sting in her heart. The reason given by Calvert left her feeling somewhat upset, even a little angry. Lately, Ash had been wondering if she had changed or if she had simply been oblivious to her true self. Since her return to the Turner family, she had become someone else entirely.
“Let’s stick to that principle and maintain the boundaries. Let’s avoid any actions that could lead to misunderstandings and keep a proper distance,” Ash said firmly. “Is there anything else?” Her thoughts were a tangled mess, and being in the same space with Calvert would only make it harder to sort them out.

In the end, Ash was the first to leave the meeting room. Calvert stared at the spot where she had been sitting, lost in thought for a moment. When he left the room, he ran into Vanessa.
“Mr. Snider? When did you get here?” Vanessa said.
Vanessa and Calvert knew each other, though only in passing. His expression remained cold and distant as he gave her a polite nod.
“Did you meet with Ms. Turner? Have you decided on the leader for the Triple–A Game?” Vanessa asked, purely about
business.
“Finn Meyers,” Calvert replied.
At the mention of his name, Vanessa froze, her eyes widening. “Finn? He’s back? And he’s going to be the leader?”
Calvert nodded. “I hope you can lend your support. After all, you two have a good rapport. The Triple–A Game is more important to Funtime Games than to Snider Group.”
“Sure,” Vanessa replied, concealing her flurry of emotions with a smile.
After her brief exchange with Calvert, Vanessa went straight to Ash. “I just ran into Mr. Snider. I’m fine with working with Finn.”
“What’s going on between you two?” Ash had already composed herself and even found the energy to probe Vanessa about her love life.
Vanessa looked weary and hesitated for a moment. “Nothing. We’re just old friends. He’s quite capable. With him on board, we’re one step closer to Triple–A’s success,” she said plainly. “But he’s very demanding of his subordinates. I’m worried that the new team might not be able to handle the pressure. He only works with people who are both efficient and skilled.”
Ash couldn’t help but feel like they were talking about two completely different people. Her impression of Finn was that of a carefree and frivolous guy.
With a skeptical look, she asked seriously, “Are we talking about the same person? Does Finn truly hold such high standards for his work?”
“He might come off as laid–back and flippant, but when it comes to work, his abilities are unquestionable. Otherwise, he wouldn’t still be the top game developer in the country,” Vanessa replied. “I think we need to coordinate with Maida Park about the team. Once Finn gets involved, it won’t be easy for anyone.”
Ash’s curiosity was piqued. She wanted to see for herself how Finn would manage the team and how quickly he would produce results.
“You know him well, so I’ll leave the team arrangements to you and Maida Park. If you need anything, just let me know,” Ash said. She then arched an eyebrow and added, “Anyway, are you really not going to talk about what’s going on between the two of you?” Ash felt compelled to circle back to the topic.
Vanessa gave a helpless smile. “You’re really curious, aren’t you? Ms. Turner, why are you so nosy? There’s nothing between
