But Ash pressed the blade harder against his throat, drawing a thin line of blood. “Move again and I’ll slice you open,” she hissed, her eyes cold and ruthless.
The kidnapper froze, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously against the knife’s edge.
As the car slowed to a stop, the driver suddenly whirled around, brandishing another weapon.
Ash reacted instantly, kicking the back of his seat hard. The unexpected jolt sent him crashing into the dashboard.
“Want to die?” Ash growled, pressing the knife deeper into her captive’s neck.
“Freeze!” he yelled at his partner, his voice laced with panic, as he suddenly realized the woman was more capable than he had thought.
Ash flung open the car door and dragged her captive out with her. The eerie silence of the deserted area was broken only by their ragged breathing. As she scanned her surroundings for an escape route, a blinding light suddenly pierced the darkness.
In that split second of distraction, her hostage twisted free, wresting the knife from her grasp and turning the tables. “Not so tough now, are you?” he sneered, pressing the blade against her throat.
A sleek car pulled up, and Calvert stepped out, his presence exuding icy authority. “Let her go,” he commanded, his voice carrying a chill that made even Ash shiver.
The kidnapper scoffed. “Who the hell do you think you”
His words were cut short as Calvert moved with lightning speed. Before anyone could react, the kidnapper was on the ground, howling in agony.
Ash stood motionless, eyeing Calvert with grudging admiration. Nice moves,” she said, arching an eyebrow.
Calvert’s piercing gaze swept over her, reassessing. This woman’s composure in the face of danger was somehow unexpected.
“Come here,” he ordered curtly.
As Ash took a step forward, the kidnapper’s partner lunged at her with a knife. She tensed, ready to defend herself, but Calvert was faster. In an instant, he had her shielded behind his larger frame, one arm around her waist while the other deflected the attack.
The blade sliced through his sleeve, blood quickly staining the fabric. With a grimace, Calvert kicked the quacker away. sending him sprawling.
Ash grabbed Calvert’s arm, her eyes widening at the severity of the wound. “Idiot,” she muttered, dragging him towards the car. “Always trying to play the hero.”
She sped to the nearest hospital, arriving just in time–the bleeding wasn’t severe, and the wound wasn’t life–threatening.
Once Calvert was being treated, Ash overheard him on the phone, his tone uncharacteristically gentle as he reassured

Chapter 6
Ash couldn’t help but smirk, only to find Calvert glaring at her when she looked up.
“Something funny?” he asked, his voice glacial
Ash shrugged, leaning against the doorframe. Just surprised to hear you can actually sound human.”
“Eavesdropping is rude,” he snapped
“Please, as if I wanted to hear that. You’re the one talking too loud Ash retorted, turning to leave.
Before she could take a step. Calvert’s hand shot out, gripping her wrist and yanking her back against the wall.
“You ungrateful woman, he growled, looming over her. “Not even a thank you after I saved your life?”
Ash’s eyes flashed. “Saved me? I had everything under control before you showed up playing white knight”
Calvert snorted, “You? Under control?”
The derision in his eyes ignited Ash’s fury. Without thinking, she brought her knee up sharply between his legs. Calvert doubled over with a pained hiss, releasing her.
“You know what? I should thank Jade for being willing to take trash like you,” Ash spat. ‘Do me a favor and break off this engagement ASAP. Every second I have to think about marrying you makes me sick.”
Calvert, who had never been spoken to so crudely in his life, clenched his fists as rage threatened to overwhelm his usually ironclad self-control.
The drive back to the Turner family’s residence was tense and silent. Upon arrival, Brooke enveloped Ash in a tearful embrace, checking her for injuries. “Oh, sweetheart, I was so worried!”
Meanwhile, Jade fussed over Calvert’s arm. “Calvert, what happened? Are you alright?”
Ash rolled her eyes. “Oh, he’s fine. Just couldn’t resist showing off and it backfired.”
Calvert’s jaw clenched, his patience wearing dangerously thin. If reason hadn’t stayed his hand, he might have already lost his temper.
“Are you okay?” Jade held Calvert’s arm gently, on the verge of tears with worry.
His expression softened as he looked at Jade. “It’s nothing, just a scratch”
Ash let out a derisive snort but bit her tongue. As much as she despised the man, she didn’t want to appear completely heartless to everyone else because of him.
Josh thanked Calvert and then addressed the room. “Your grandfather doesn’t know about this incident, and it’s going to stay that way. Understood?”
Everyone
dded in agreement.
Impatient with Calvert’s silence on breaking off their engagement, Ash spoke up. “Didn’t you have something to tell everyone, Mr. Snider?”
All eyes turned to Calvert, and Josh smiled encouragingly as he asked, “What is it, Calvert?”
Caught off guard. Calvert glared at Ash, realizing she was clearly trying to force his hand, thinking he wouldn’t have the guts

to speak up in front of everyone. If that’s your game, you are so wrong, he thought,
“Yeah, actually, regarding my engagement to Ash–he began.
“Mr. and Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Snider is here,” a servant interrupted, ushering in Calvert’s grandmother Dorothy Snider.
Dorothy immediately embraced Ash. “You must be Ash! I heard what happened at the party. Are you alright, dear?”
I’m fine, thank you,” Ash replied, startled by the sudden affection

Drawing herself up regally, she announced, “I overheard Calvert mentioning the engagement. Now that Ash has returned. we must move forward with the wedding plans immediately”
