Chapter 38
The woman turned out to be a Beta, and thankfully, Kai dodged in time–otherwise, it
could’ve cost him his life.
My wolf, on the other hand, was itching to jump out and fight her. But the woman had her Night
sights locked on Kai, completely ignoring me no matter how much I postured or growled.
She fought more fiercely by the second, her aggression drawing in other wolves. The situation was spiraling, and we were no match for them–two Omegas against an escalating mob was a losing battle.
*“Stop fighting! Run!“* I shouted through our Mindlink, then turned and bolted down a
narrow path.
Thankfully, Kai didn’t hesitate. He followed close behind, and the female wolf didn’t give chase. We finally allowed ourselves a moment to breathe.
Gasping for air, I turned to Kai. “Did you notice? Something’s off about her–and her dog.”
“No kidding!” Kai snapped, his chest heaving with frustration. “What Beta in their right mind would go on a berserk rampage like that?”
“And she had the nerve to insult me, saying I wasn’t as good–looking as her dog!”
Kai was furious, his muscles practically vibrating beneath his T–shirt. His chest and biceps twitched like they were performing a dance.
I had pegged him as someone who avoided conflict, but clearly, I’d underestimated how vengeful he could be. Still, I needed to calm him down. Keeping my tone as soothing as possible, I said, “Let it go. She’s been living in this forest for years. Provoking them won’t do us any good.”
Kai’s anger was far from subsiding. “Let it go? She said she’d round up a pack of Betas to rip me apart, roast me alive, and feed me to her damn dog!”

i sighed, “Maybe it’s because we parked on her territory. Let’s quietly move the car and take # different rome”
Kai scowled, clearly unwilling, but he didn’t argue,
Turning my back on him, I made it clear the decision was final. With a string of grumbles, Kai reluctantly agreed,
* pulled out the map, studying it until the forest fell completely silent. Only then did we
Cautiously head back toward the car,
As we walked, I handed Kai a custom–made handgun. His eyes lit up. “I didn’t expect you to be this prepared”
“Of course, Omegas can’t afford to be caught off guard.” I replied.
Kai chuckled, and 1 cut him off before he could start. “No thanks.”
We both laughed,
The path ahead remained uneventful, giving us time to talk.
“What do you think the odds are that Carl is the culprit?” I asked.
Carl was the tattooed Beta that Ethan and I met.
Without waiting for a response, I continued, “People like him usually have a lot of bark but no bite. He’s a drunk, prone to empty bravado, but I doubt he’s capable of something as gruesome as dismemberment-”
Kai suddenly tapped my shoulder, cutting me off.
I glanced sideways and froze. Emerging from a side alley were seven or eight hulking Betas, each massive in size and far more imposing than the average Beta. A streak of red marked each of their foreheads, giving them a feral, menacing look.
“Get those two bitches! Skin them alive!” barked the largest one, punctuating his order with a stomp that shattered the windshield of our car.

Kai and I shouted simultaneously:
“Carl!”
“My car!”
Kai was too stunned to move, while my anger flared instantly. Almost in unison, we charged forward.
I used my smaller frame to dart around the Betas, trying to keep them occupied while shouting through the Mindlink to Kai. *“Call the Gammas from the forest authority!“*
Kai, however, stood frozen for a full thirty seconds, fumbling with his phone like he’d forgotten how it worked.
When he finally managed to dial, it was Ethan’s voice on the other end.
Well, well, well–I already knew he was unreliable.
“What’s wrong?” Ethan asked.
“Alpha Ethan? Why is it you? Anyway, we need your help–back in Fire Phantom Forest!” Kai’s voice trembled with urgency.
“What happened?”
“We’re under attack! Claire’s here too!”
“Damn it. Give me five minutes.”
The line went dead, replaced by the sound of relentless wind, no doubt from Ethan racing
toward us.
We could only hold our ground and hope those five minutes weren’t too long.
